Here, in partial celebration of my new default icon (postcard shot of parachute ride at Coney Island, circa 1907), are some goodies from the box of (mostly) postcards I scored at the big yard sale day in Ypsi a little while ago. First, a lovely cafeteria shot:

Kretz's, Dubuque

For more, look here:

Vegas.

Whacky-Color Vegas

Ft. Laud boys

That Queer Connie Francis Song

and my favorite of the whole box:

Munchen Zepp

Whacky Munich Zeppelin

There were also a few pictures in there. Highlights:

4th of July guy

4th of July guy (detail from group shot)

I love that "Driveway Guy" shot. It makes you wonder who he is. Same thing with the "4th of July Guy" but not as much 'cuz the picture is more recent. The Zeppelin postcard rocks too. MORE MORE MORE!!!

Very cool, L. That zeppelin card is neat, but I find myself liking the Vegas one the best. Don't know why--all the wacky colors and fifties-looking people perhaps.

Reminds me, too, of a super 8 reel my dad had taken of the old Vegas strip with the neon cowboy. I always thought that was cool. Would have been in the same timeframe.

Okay, it's yours---claim the Vegas card any time, in person, Tremmel Ave., Z2, MI, etc.

Welcome home, btw. Bet you'll be going to bed early tonight.

No, but you make me wish I did! (That would be a cool address.) (Looks like the Dr. Seuss way of spelling a place name.)

Well, apparently I am alone in my love of the Kretz Cafeteria in Iowa, but I do love it. The color of the floor tiles and the architectural set up with the two floors and windows around the whole top bringing lots of lovely light into the already brightly colored cafe--It's awesome. I wonder if it still exists? If so, I wonder if it still looks like that--it should, I can't think of anywhere else in the world (that I've seen--granted, not much) that has yellow, orange and white floor tiles. I want to go there and have a grilled cheese and tomato soup!

That's a lot of what I love about it, too.

I like subjects for postcards that are kitchy, yes, but especially if they're, say, ordinary everyday places not usually celebrated, or related to the trip to get to the supposed vacation destination, or pictures of the road itself. And diners and roller coasters. And what else. Tourist traps, the cheesier the better. (World's biggest ball of twine, e.g.) (Or better yet, World's Second Biggest something-or-another.) (Like the Second Deepest Hand-dug Well---that's in Kansas, I believe.) "Roadside" is the postcard collectors' category my favorites probably fall into most often.

It's still there---near the mall parking lot. Last I heard they were going to make it into some kind of tourist info center.

I hope they do. Depots are such cool buildings. They turned Union Station in Omaha into a museum. They tore down Union Station in Pittsfield in the 70s to make way for a grocery store.
