I still remember the conversation amongst a group of siblings back in Kalamazoo when I must have been no older than five. My blue-eyed sister was talking about eye color. I had never noticed eye color. She had blue, another sibling had blue, someone else had brown. I asked what color my eyes were. Somehow the idea of having part of me as colorful as blue was so exciting, and maybe I was as cool as my big sister, who was nine years older than me, and therefore impressive. She looked at my eyes and pronounced them...brown. Boring, dirt brown. I was so deeply disappointed to have the color of the sky snatched away in an instant.

I never really appreciated brown eyes until this Tuesday. I was at the dentist having the first phase of a new crown done, and the dentist and her first assistant were running out of hands. Things were getting pretty uncomfortably at my end, too. Starting to get a little hard to breathe. So she called in a second assistant, one I hadn't seen before. And she looked down at me with the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen. The kind of rich deep brown eyes you can just sink right into. I kind of had to be careful not to stare, but they really were calming.

:) were you drugged up, by any chance?

i was rather late to notice eye color myself. but, once i did, ...

mine are a most unfortunate shade: nothing. some say "hazel"--- which i've always taken to mean "nothing in particular". talk about boring.

My dentist never gives me the good stuff :-(

I think my ex had hazel. Though she made them out to be ambicuously colored--sometimes they looked green, sometimes they looked brownish, but you could never tell. So instead of "nothing in particular" it was more like "mysteriously ambiguous."

I guess every eye color needs a PR agent to make it sound cool.

Ack! Your Dadaist is all over your LJ when I view it in your style, and all I can think when I see him en masse is "Mr Peanut!"

i think a lot of them brown ones are nice, but there are also varieties that kinda lose their edge with age (take it from me--an entire family of brown-eyed people, in a whole nation dominated by the brown-eyed). i think it might be an effect of aging. not sure. but they lose luster somehow.

blue, on the other hand, i always thought retained some liveliness--even if you're all ashen at some point (to which i'm getting), you're still assured of this one point of vivid color.

talk about always wishing for what one will not have :)
