I resent that I have to use my own 39¢ stamp on this danged jury questionnaire---within 10 days, in fact, or risk prosecution. I'm debating walking it over to the courthouse, just on principle.

This shite would most decidedly not fly in Baltimore. People'd be like, "Come get me."

I've SO had this experience!! I told Debbie I was going to write something on the envelope, and she agreed. Until she read it: "This should be a business reply envelope, you extortionists." She freaked out and said "But you said you were going to say cheapskates!! You can say extortionists, they'll put us under surveillance!" So I had to cross that part out, and had to extend the cross-out into a border around the comment that this should be a business reply envelope, which I kept on there. I have to admit, though, that I felt like quite an asshole when they returned it to me because I'd failed to sign it!!

So funny... I had a debate with myself about whether to write something snarky below the place they say, after explaining to re-fold Flap A and Flap B and attach postage, "NO ADDITIONAL ENVELOPE NECESSARY". Some favor, government institution. I opted not to kvetch, though, from thinking similar to D's. I love "extortionists," though. Damn right!

So here's what's even funnier: I signed the top half but I don't think I signed the bottom half, so I'm probably getting mine back, too. Ah, well. That's one way to delay jury duty.

Well, so do I. I kinda like jury duty, as long as it doesn't come on a day I'm aiming to be somewhere else.

Do I remember correctly that you've not been asked yet? I know you're registered to vote. Sometimes when you move to a new town and register, you're called to jury duty pretty soon afterwards.

Oh, dude. Maybe you'll get a trial right away in Chicago if you switch. I'm sure the courts are pretty busy there.

You're not into your local elections there? I hear in Chicago you can vote lots of times in each election, and even vote when you're dead... it all sounds very exciting.

The one time I was called up, I just remember a lot of pain-in-the ass waiting while the lawyers and judge were working out a last minute settlement. They never even got to the point of selection--we were just somone's bargaining chips, apparently. That was a collossal waste of time. You know, if the timine were right, I wouldn't have a problem serving--I think it might be interesting to do once. I wonder how Schoolcraft deals with us part-time faculty scum on jury duty--there is a chance that the union contract would keep the paychecks coming.

That case for which I was an alternate juror was interesting and also emotionally draining. In some ways, I wish I'd acted insane or really stupid during jury selection. I still have a lot of emotions that come to the surface when I think about that case. It's probably a good thing I was only an alternate--if I'd been voting, the jury would probably never have reached its unanimous verdict, which I think was most likely correct. But I never could have brought myself beyond that last sliver of doubt. (I never have been sure if it's "reasonable doubt" or not.) Anyway, enough.

I remember how that experience really shook you to the core. Of course it was a tumultuous time for you in general, but, you know, if you'd have known it would be that way for you & could have registered that fact with the jury people, that would surely have been cause for you to be excused.

Maybe your next jury will be for something simple, like car theft or forged checks.
