So familiar, this morning's chipping of the stubborn ice... but rare in these parts. Came out to it often in Baltimore. The ice storm and freezing rain thing occurred in a Charm City winter more often than any form of snow, let alone the dry wafty lovely flakes we so often get up here.

This kind of winter, though longer, is better than that kind of winter.

ugh! I got to chip two windshields this morning- my truck as well as my work car. The truck was a bit of a rougher go, as the heat takes quite a while to get started on the old girl. Give me a pile of snow to broom off the truck any day compared to the chipping, chopping, and scraping!

Seriously! I've actually kept my old snow brush for years cuzza its superior ice-chipping performance over the new (better for snow & squeegeeing) one---it's got a triplet of scoring edges that dig right in, and its flat ice scraper blade, while more narrow than the new one's, meets the surface of the glass much better. Today was a day I was glad still to have it.

Though the Rash (March) thing to do would've been to throw it out yesterday.

That reminds me---I want to throw out more stuff in a way that feels potentially rash. And burn some. Yeah, fire up the ol' trash barrel. Uh-hunh.

sounds like a nice scraper. i dug out my secondary short one from the back of the truck, since the longer one i use is minus the scraping part (most likely from same such weather last winter). bigfinedaddy was kind enough to trade the short one for the longer reach one she was hiding in her car:) do remember that if you are throwing out stuff that might be worth something to someone else that you should farm the rid out to a good recipient(freecycle, reuse center, pto, etc)

now, of course i didn't think you were. and no offense---see ":]". isn't that why god made emoticons?

oops! i was looking at this response from my email rather than lj itself, and the emoticon was somewhat hidden in the other crap that comes along with the lj posts that get sent to my email:)

back in the day

i also had a short, older, older scraper - from the days before plastic was supple -- for hacking away at ice, in addition to my snow brusher.

to throw away the ice scraper would be foolish march. throwing shit away that you haven't used in 18 months would bring you back to rash march:) it's always hard though in michigan, mid-january you find yourself squinting at your t-shirts thinking "why the hell do i have ten t-shirt?" 6 months later, you're staring at your hooded sweatshirts, thinking "three hooded sweatshirts? am i crazy?!"

as far as ice on the car, someone here suggested that everyone do what she does -- throw hot water on it -- take some pictures of how that works for you;)

I like the stories of the coin-operated heaters that sit (sat) on poles like parking meters in N. Dakota for heating up yer engine to get it to start. And I like the tales you hear of people running extension cords from the house so the hair dryer can defrost the lock.

Call me crazy, but I feel spring right around the corner, and I'm trying to appreciate this last of winter with every crunchy trudge I take in my ol' boots. There's something that feels good and competant and solid and able about being in boots. Having dry, warm-ish feet walking through frozenness. I like it.

I thank you for the perspective. That's just what I needed to be less pissed about the crappy weather and how much it's slowing me down.

i was hoping it would snow on wednesday

they promised. and it didn't, and it would have been my favorite day of the week because it was going to be warm and fuzzy and the snow would fall. this is the week of break and the silence would be even more heavenly than it usually is when the fuzzy kind of snow falls and noone wants to drive and i can walk the street by myself.
