Big Oil

Exxon's vile (record-setting) profits last year:

$ 36,100,000,000.00

That's almost $300,000 per minute of 40-hr-a-week work, all year long, no time off. And in the last quarter, when they really raked it in (post-Katrina), the $10,700,000,000 they profited (this is profit, not gross revenue, folks) comes to $5716 a second.

That's, like, the entire annual payroll of MR in, what, 8 or 9 minutes?

I'm just trying to get some sense of the big dollar signs we're talkin' here.

now lets hope they put that money to good use rebuilding the off-shore and restoring new orleans, etc...Not only did they profit, but they profitted off of all of the people who were displaced by those storms (who obviously had to contribute to gas in some form or another to get the hell out of there.)

But yeah....that's appauling...Guess it goes to show we really like our gas driven toys in the US. How's this compare to last year?

dunno!

I'm sure any "good" use they put any of it to will be only that good use that seems likely to them to lead to further nauseatingly excessive profits in the futures.

So, have you started looking for work in the big oil industry yet? I'm considering it now, after thinking about this :-)

Really? You don't strike me as an all-about-the-bucks kinda guy!

(You're just having me on?)

yeah....I'm not about the bucks...I'm about doing good for society...That's why I work at a place where we ensure that 3 million people get their paychecks promptly and accurately :-)

Now there's where my inner sleaze comes out---I was just today trying to get the office manager to agree to give me a paycheck every day. I said I'd accept half my normal (weekly) rate---and then offered to go down to just a third!

She did not go for it.

She did laugh sportingly, however, considering that it wasn't actually funny. Just office-superficial funny.

sometime mid-april, mehopes. Just gotta line up somewhat of a semblance of gainful employment post-move.

I'm rather busy this month, but I'm sure we can work out some time to get together to play some bones....I've actually forgotten how to score again...

Somehow I have the feeling it won't take you long to pick it up again---and then clean up the table with me.

don't you LOVE how we're paying for that!? oh, home fuel prices
are SO hig because of Hurricane Katrina - `we GOTTA charge ya those
prices, because the fuel lines were/are damaged' - you mean going
up 59%!? how can it be justified....i could insert a few swear words now.

Bullshit Big Oil

Have you heard their defense for their profits? "We don't set the price of oil. The world markets do." But they sure as hell set the price of their gasoline and other petroleum products. If crude oil is so high, how are they still managing to profit so handsomely?

You know, it may be entirely coincidental (yeah, right!), but look who's in the White House.

I think the real truth is that they set the price of gas as a percentage of world market cost (resulting in automatically adjusting profits)....which, in effect, they can be truthful that the world market is setting the price. :-P
