CANADA REPORTS HUGE JUMP IN IMMIGRATION
Over 55,000,000 Requests for Citizenship Since Tuesday Night

Canadian immigration officials have reported a huge increase in the number of requests for Canadian citizenship in the past twenty-four hours, with over fifty-five million such inquiries pouring in since late Tuesday night.

Of those fifty-five million requests, well over 99.99% of them came from U.S. citizens, the lion's share residing in such states as New York, California, Massachusetts, Oregon, Washington, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Vermont, Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew said that he was "flabberghasted" by the fifty-five-million-plus requests for Canadian citizenship, adding that it was difficult to pinpoint the precise reasons for the staggering increase.

"My only theory is that after many years of exposure in the U.S., hockey is finally starting to catch on," Mr. Pettigrew said.

He cautioned, however, that it is impossible to know exactly what is sparking the sudden interest in America's frozen neighbor to the north. "People answering our immigration hotline say that it is hard to understand many of the American callers because they are sobbing uncontrollably."

In other news, President Bush used his acceptance speech Wednesday to reach out to supporters of Sen. John Kerry, telling them, "You can run, but you can't hide." . . .

In all seriousness, most countries do have separatist movements within various portions of them - Quebec in Canada, Ireland in the U.K., the Basque region in Spain, etc. - and in the U.S., we have only the South. But the South bosses the rest of around these days so much that it's not the South that needs to secede anymore. It's the north. So why is there no serious secession movement in the North?

I'd seen the top one. Both are cool. One nice element of Tuesday was the blueness of the Northeast from Maryland on up to Maine. New Hampshire going blue was a small and yet greatly appreciated victory for me.

I do like the maps. However, as person who would seriously like to start a "Religious Left" movement, I must say that I think Jesus would come to Canada with us. It irritates me to no end that the so-called "religious" right acts and votes in a way that is so opposed to the Christianity I belive in. But then I'm an evil Methodist, in the words of Pat Robertson, so what do I know?

I heard a guy on the radio yesterday or the day before saying that it's the other side of Christianity that needs to organize. Something about the many Christians who have moral values like peace over war, respect for the planet, actual compassion (translates into all kinds of public policy things---universal health care, greater economic justice, etc.) have the potential to get it together and become the majority of churchy-types. Actually holier-than-thou next to the fundies, vs. taking a hateful stance of holier-than-thou-ness(-itude).
