Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool fics/fanvids/podfics/fancrafts/fanart/other kinds of fanworks have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here.

Wishing everyone Merry Christmas (if you celebrate) and a Happy Thursday (if you don't.) šŸ˜‰

Castle Noel in Medina, Ohio

Inside

Have you ever wondered what happens to the props and costumes used to make your favorite movies? Well, sometimes they end up with collectors. And when a collector is as talented as Mark Klaus, you end up with an amazing, 40,000 square foot experience full of Christmas magic and surprises around every corner.Ā

Combining years of artistic experience and an amazing knack for the theatric, the fittingly-named Mr. Klaus has taken an old church building and turned it into a beautiful Castle dedicated to all things Christmas. Mark's love of Christmas started at a young age, and, after establishing a successful career crafting porcelain figurines and ornaments, he decided to begin collecting keepsakes from some of his favorite movies. Over the years, Klaus has amassed the "the world’s largest privately owned collection of Hollywood Christmas movie props and costumes", and, in 2013, he decided to share his collection by opening Castle Noel.

In addition to items like Will Ferrell's costume from "Elf" and the sleigh from "How The Grinch Stole Christmas", Castle Noel is also home to a variety of Christmas storefront displays from iconic locations like Bloomingdale's and Saks Fifth Avenue, as well as interactive attractions like a replica of the slide that Ralphie rides in "A Christmas Story".

If you love to celebrate Christmas year round, you won't want to miss this unique and festive place!Ā

Summary: Snake returns from Operation N313, lauded a hero and finds the latest shipment of Foxhound recruits already at the camp. Still struggling to sort out his thoughts about the mission, he finds his attention drawn to one rookie in particular, a scrawny, unassuming runt who can't seem to stay out of trouble.

Reccer's Notes: This just works so damn well as an alternate first meeting for these two! It's such a dismal, pessimistic setting - as expected with this canon - but the way these two forge a connection, finding some degree of comfort and caring and hope - makes me really emotional! And I love the use of the book, as well! (Also somehow even though I always knew the Hal connection to 2001: A Space Odyssey I never noticed how Dave fits in to it, too?! 🤦)

Theme: Amnesty, Established Relationship, Hurt/Comfort, Magic, Mythical Creatures: Demons, Non-Sexual Intimacy, Spells & Curses, Trauma and Recovery

Summary: Luo Binghe's healing powers falter in the shape of the wounds Xiu Ya once gave him. He does the only logical thing--HIDES IT.
Shen Qingqiu knows something is wrong with his husband, but finding out what is going to hurt...

A sweet little post-canon fic about healing, plotted with and illustrated by the incredible Falcities for the SVSSS Gotcha for Gaza

Reccer's Notes: This is such a sweet, thoughtful fic! Binghe always tries so hard to be strong, and never really quite escapes the trauma reaction that he doesn't deserve help or that suffering is just something to be endured. In this post-canon fic, his husband gets the opportunity to tell him otherwise and show him just how much he loves all parts of him, including the demonic parts!

It also has quite possibly my favourite (and very appropriate to the themes!) no beta tag ever: No beta but we live regardless

First he had thought he was dead and a ghost, then he'd been informed he was in the future, then they'd tried to tell him that he was a demon. But still, the most unbelievable thing this strange future version of his shijie had tried to convince him of was that he was married to their shizun.

Reccer's Notes: This was written for the prompt 'Time Travel - Character discovers future self is apparently happy in the MOST unlikely relationship', and truly I cannot think of a better canon ship for that than this pair šŸ˜„ This is so sweet, and baby Binghe's POV is so perfectly young and hurt and yearning and protective-instincts-inciting...! And then the canon couple themselves are just so very sweet and perfect... <33 Such love!!!

I am thinking of you today because it is Christmas,
and I wish you happiness.

And tomorrow, because it will be the day after Christmas,
I shall still wish you happiness; and so on throughout the year.

I may not be able to tell you about it every day because I may be far away,
or because both of us may be very busy, or perhaps I cannot even afford to pay the postage on so many letters;or find the time to write them.

But that makes no difference. The thought and the wish will be here just the same
In my work and in the business of life I mean to try not to be unfair to you in any way.

In my pleasure if we can be together, I would like to share the fun with you.

Whatever joy or success that comes to you will make me glad.

Without pretense, and in plain words Good Will is what I mean.

May the spirit of Christmas be yours throughout the year.

All That Means or Mourns by Ruthanna Emrys. I really love how Ruthana Emrys thinks about community and connection and the natural world. "Transformed by a broad-spread fungal infection that connects humans with nature, one woman feels closer to the world than ever, but further from the people she loves the most…"

And tomorrow will be an early morning. But we played games until far too late this evening. Holding off on stockings til the morning. Non-food stuff is sorted, but I need to split up the candy.

Good run to get comics, and lunch at the local Italian restaurant next to the comic shop. Brief nap mid-afternoon, but not quite enough. This is why I took Monday off as well, so I can catch up on sleep once they head out.

One more sleep 'til Xmas.

I am not doing brilliantly at getting things done. I still need to finish holiday cards, for example. And, in particular, I need to find where I put the stamps I am sure I have.

I also need to finish finalizing some travel plans. There are tickets to various events that I need to buy, too.

And I am nearly out of clean clothes.

I could, theoretically, be getting some of this done tonight. But, I think I am going to prioritize the book I’m in the middle of.

Overslept my alarm until 8 AM. I don’t know how long they’re serving breakfast.

Planes are sitting in a line waiting to take off. The view from my hotel window is great entertainment.

Had a nice breakfast. Everything about this hotel is perfection. It’s going to spoil me for other hotels.

I’m tired though. I’m thinking of skipping my downtown trip and staying at the hotel. I want to take a nap. It’s nice having a day in which I can do whatever I want.

Oooh. I was looking at DoorDash trying to get the correct address for the hotel because I need to DoorDash later, and I saw a place with Shrimp Scampi. That sounds delicious!

I had problems falling asleep for my nap because my brain was whirring, but finally did. Now I'm up working on a prompt for my medical journal with ChatGPT, but I need a pad of paper to rough things out. (I'm designing printable planners to sell on etsy.) Something else to get with my DoorDash. Okay, I ordered a bunch of stuff from Walgreens for DoorDash.

Not sure what to do. I’m not hungry yet, but I need the pad of paper to work. I could do two separate DoorDashes.

The DoorDash guy found me with the stuff from Walgreens. He spoke Spanish with very little English, and I was thinking that he’s one of the people whom Trump wants to get rid of. He’s providing a service. I added hand cream to the order at the last minute because my hands are rough. My mom can’t tell me to wear my gloves, so I need to get with it.

When I was bringing the DoorDash stuff upstairs, I noticed that the ā€œgrab-and-goā€ place had grilled cheese on sourdough. That sounded good, so I went back down and got some. I was eating grilled cheese watching planes take off. Life is good :)

I said on Facebook that this reminded me of the time Erik and I went to O’Hare to watch the planes take off, back when you could do that. A security guy did ask us what we were doing, and we explained that we wanted to see the planes take off, and he said that he did something similar when he was young. I guess that an airport is a good place to find airplane-crazy people. (When I was a kid, I could identify all the types of commercial aircraft on sight. I can’t do that now.)

Speaking of the airport, it seems to be quieting down. (Yesterday, it was packed.) I’m hoping that my flight tomorrow won’t be full. (Yes, it is. Drat.)

I saw a guy doing ballet in the hotel lobby. You never know who (or what) you'll see at a hotel.

Ran a draft of my medical journal through ChatGPT, and it mangled part of it. I'm playing a fun game of "how to think like a computer" to modify the prompt. But I didn't expect it to come out right the first time. (Hmm, maybe I could write ChatGPT prompts as a sideline?)

It's time to check in for my flight. I put the cane together, and yes, I can sit on it, but it isn't great as a cane. I'm debating whether to ask for a wheelchair or not. I can probably walk if I can take breaks and sit down for a while. Damn knee. The Wall Street Journal's "Jetway Jesus Miracle" article has got me spooked about asking for help. I definitely am asking the doctor when I see her for physical therapy to work on the knee muscles. I'm trying to figure out how to pay for WiFi, and it looks like I have to do that on the flight itself. I thought about paying with miles, but WiFi isn't very expensive, and I want to save my miles up.

I think that I'll order food around 6 PM. Traffic at the airport is picking up. Also, this hotel seems to be where the pilots stay. Makes sense.

Wow, the food was good (Shrimp Scampi, cheese garlic bread, and cheesecake). Lots of food, and I couldn’t finish it. I’ll finish it tomorrow right before I leave the hotel (I got an extension of the checkout time until 12) so I won’t need to eat at the airport. I’ll have to remember this place (Pasta to Go) for when I come back.

I started yawning around 6 PM. I think that I’ll make it an early night. I seem to be becoming less of a night owl as I get older, although I do seem to have a peak around 5 PM.

Whoops, my card keys stopped working. The desk guy said that it was because I had back-to-back reservations. The key from the first day stopped working. He fixed it. I think that's a sign that I should go to bed soon. I'll get ready for bed and read. I want to get to breakfast really early so that I can eat my pasta later.

The dog boarding place posted a picture of the dogs at the kennel:

They seem to be sticking together, not surprisingly, because they're friends. I want to give Bella a scritch.

It's warmer than usual here this Christmas season. šŸ˜„ It's more like early spring weather right now than winter weather.
And it's bizarre to still be able to go outside everyday and tromp around in the mud and muck.

Looking at confused flower bulbs coming up, trees budding, and so much more Spring like behaviour out there.

It's currently raining outside. šŸ˜„
It does not Look like it is Christmas Eve, heading into Christmas...

But, regardless of our strange weather, it's been a pretty laid back holiday season so far here. Hopefully you are having a good holiday season where you are, as well. šŸ’•

Santa Claus Village Square

Finland's Lapland region is a land of dense forests and pure air known as one of the best places in the world to catch the Northern Lights, and also to meet Santa Claus! The region has capitalized on its winter wonderland geography and climate, and its capital city, Rovaniemi has, since 2009, claimed to be the official hometown of Santa.

This moniker has now been challenged by a Dutch non-fiction author who has recently submitted an application of trademark annulment with theĀ European Union Intellectual Property Office. The Office has yet to make a decision.

Despite the legal challenge, Rovaniemi is entirely committed to its claim to fame, with all kinds of Santa themed attractions spread throughout the city, and a booming Christmas tourism economy. Visitors can spend time in places like the Santa Claus Village, the Santa Claus Secret Forest, and SantaPark, a theme park located underground. This last attraction comes with a fascinating history - despite being a theme park, the main purpose of the underground bunker was originally far from festive, as it was built as a bomb shelter to accommodate up to 3,600 people in the event of a bombing, chemical, or nuclear attack.

Even if the city loses its official patent, the Santa spirit will likely remain strong in Rovaniemi.Ā

Dear Carolyn: I’m a year out from chemo and still officially cancer-free. Also, my hair is back to normal — yay. To celebrate, I had it dyed a beautiful violet shade, my favorite color.

Now my dad is giving me so much grief about it. He keeps asking why I need everyone to notice me and ask about my cancer. I don’t care if anyone notices my hair; I did it for me. The color makes me smile every time I look in the mirror. And if anyone does mention the color, I tell them I did it because I like the color purple. I never mention cancer at all. Why would I want to talk about that? I feel good, I can run and hike again, and I want to focus on things like that.

My dad refuses to accept my explanation, because he believes everyone who does anything he considers to be out of the ordinary does it ā€œto get attentionā€ or to ā€œfreak people out.ā€ I can’t seem to convince him how stupid that is, that people do things because they want to and it makes them happy.

Can you think of a way to get through to him? I’m really tired of having to listen to him criticize my hair every time he sees me.

Dear Miss Manners: I have long been troubled by the carol ā€œWe Wish You a Merry Christmas,ā€ specifically the intimation that if we don’t give the uninvited guests their figgy pudding, they ā€œwon’t go.ā€

How are we to address this request? I don’t want to be ungrateful for their wishes, but think that their insistence is a bit beyond what is considered polite and reasonable. Can you advise how to proceed?

What was that? Miss Manners couldn’t quite hear you over the ruckus made by the geese a-laying, the calling birds, the French hens and the turtledoves. The partridge, fortunately, appears to have passed out under the pear tree.

This cow tunnel was built around 1926 during the modernization of Route 20. The new road split a local farm in half, preventing the cows from crossing safely. To solve the problem, the highway department constructed a tunnel beneath the roadway.

For decades, cows passed safely under the busy highway. Over time, however, the tunnel fell into disrepair as Charlton transitioned from rural ā€œcow countryā€ into a more developed area.

In recent decades, the tunnel was restored and repurposed as a public footpath. Today, it forms part of the Midstate Trail, a 92-mile hiking route that runs between Rhode Island and New Hampshire. In 2025, a local conservation group acquired land on both sides of the tunnel to help preserve this historic bovine passageway.

The Mourning Museum

Walk through the red curtain, just past the coffin-shaped door, and you enter an entirely different atmosphere: The Mourning Museum at Borrowed Time Oddities.

Borrowed Time Oddities is home to many strange, unusual, and esoteric objects, but the Mourning Museum is its true centerpiece. Inside, you’ll find antique funerary items dating back to the 1800s, alongside deformed animal specimens and examples of human osteology, including skulls, skeletons, and other bones.

Standout pieces include a 1920s glass coffin salesman’s sample, a Victorian hair wreath, and Bartholomew, a Victorian-era fetal skeleton.

After exploring the museum, step back through the coffin door to browse the rest of Borrowed Time Oddities, filled with taxidermy, wet and dry specimens, and witchy provisions of all kinds. This is the stop for lovers of the macabre in the Michigan area.

I was too tired to have the focus for Dark Souls-ing in the last few days, so binge-played 1000xResist and now I feel like I'm been punched in the head.

Basically a walking simulator/visual novel, so don't go expecting complex gameplay, but HOLY FUCK.

For all of you looking for fiction with fucked-up complicated women who are somewhere on a spectrum from "morally grey" to "evil but sympathetic" (with the odd dip into "idealistic but destructive") having fucked-up dynamics with other fucked-up complicated women: 1000xResist has SO MANY of them. It has almost no characters who don't fit that archetype, in fact.

(I considered whether it passes the reverse-Bechdel test -- i.e. two male characters have a conversation that's not about a woman -- and I think it may juuust scrape past in a 5-second exchange in one of the flashbacks, but barely. There are very very few men in this story, for plot-related reasons.)

I found out afterwards that the development team were a devised theatre group who decided to start making a game when everything was shut down during the pandemic, and somehow this fully checks out (complimentary).

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1675830/1000xRESIST/ (you can even pick it up in a bundle with Slay The Princess for bonus visual novel headfuck)

Do note the content notes from the devs: Photosensitivity Warning: Flashing Lights, Cursing and Crude Language, Generational Trauma, Acts of Violence and Terrorism, Disease Outbreak, Mention of Suicide, Mention of Animal Cruelty/Pet Death, Blood, Body Horror, Emotional Abuse, Bullying, Dead Bodies, Vomit, Drowning, Fire, Gore, Needles, Racism and General Mature Content.

(I would also add a specific note for torture, and for fucked-up mother-daughter and sister-sister relationships, that being one of the core elements of the game, along with the aforementioned generational trauma.)
