Winter is icummen in,
Lhude sing Goddamm,
Raineth drop and staineth slop,
And how the wind doth ramm!
Sing: Goddamm.
Skiddeth bus and sloppeth us,
An ague hath my ham.
Freezeth river, turneth liver,
Damn you, sing: Goddamm.
Goddamm, Goddamm, 'tis why I am, Goddamm,
So 'gainst the winter's balm.
Sing goddamm, damm, sing Goddamm.
Sing goddamm, sing goddamm, DAMM.

Cruise Day -1: San Diego

Woke up at 4:30 AM. Went back to sleep, and woke up at 6 AM. Jet lag strikes! The place that I want to go for breakfast is open, so I'll throw myself together and go there.

Went to the Corner Bakery Cafe. Their pancakes were recommended online, so I had some, and they were very good. I had Bananas Foster pancakes.

The downtown area seems to have a lot of foot traffic. Buses run late. That got me wondering about housing costs, but it’s California, so they’re probably high. Yep.

Had a nice nap. Checked where the cruise port is for tomorrow. It's a 10-minute drive from here, so I can check out a little before 11 and get there in time for boarding. (I'm in the first boarding group, and I want lunch on the ship!)

There's a Chipotle across the street. I looked at their menu though, and it doesn't excite me. I guess that I'll DoorDash. Oh, Cava (Mediterranean restaurant) is open until 10:30.

Yay, I DoorDashed clean socks (and soda). I had been wearing dirty socks. Ugh. Note to self: bring lots of socks next time for the beginning and end of the cruise. (I'm planning to wear sandals through most of it). I'll do laundry once I get on the ship.

I'm trying to get the energy to work on my Medical Journal. I just want to read though. I don't think that ChatGPT will do what I want. I'll try Word.

I got confused as to what time it was. My computer said that it was 4 PM, so I thought that I would have an early dinner. But my computer is on Chicago time. So I had a late lunch. I went to Cava and ordered the Chicken Shawarma Pita. The thing was enormous and messy. I wound up wearing part of it despite strategically placed napkins. It was good though. I had cinnamon pita chips dipped in honey for dessert.

I want to read and maybe nap. The food is knocking me out.

Yikes. My dad and his wife have COVID, and they haven’t had any of the shots. I’m worried.

Overslept my nap. It’s raining out. I’m not sure what to do now. I should get to sleep early because I need to get up early and pack, such as it is. I want to be ready to go at 10:30 AM.

It feels later than it is, not surprisingly. I think that I'll read for a while and get to bed early.

I'm thinking that moving over to DW might be the smart thing to do, even if it will be a learning curve because

it

doesn't

look

the

same.

And THIS is an indicator that I am, indeed, getting older because I don't want to spend the brain cells on figuring things out. *sigh* Guess I need to suck it up and just do it. :)

Since last I've posted here, things have been going very well. New horse Misty (we got her in Feb of 2025) is the most amazing beast on the planet. She takes excellent care of me and puts up with my nonsense even though she's a) a mare and b) a CHESTNUT mare. =D

As of today, I've lost a total of 140 lbs. That is a whole other human and it makes me sad to realize how overweight I was and how I just resisted and resisted and resisted the fixes that needed to be implemented to do what I've done for myself.

We're closing out the old year with some sadness: at some point in the next month, we're going to have to let our beloved Onslow Bickerstaff (dog) and Buddha (cat) go to cross that bridge. While I'm sure Onslow will go to a place of peace and light, I fear the cat will reincarnate as a world eater or something.

She really is full of the void.

So. If you're reading this....please let me know? I want to try to migrate here, but.....you know. It'd be nice to know some of my buddies from LJ are here.

So it's Friday and seems like Monday, so I'll be confused for a few days. Tomorrow's Saturday, right? I'll be reassuring myself several times, I'm sure.

I was going to stream some movies on Christmas but I never got around to it. Insomnia, slept the morning away, made bread 'cause I was out. And…it was too late and I was tired.

I saw two wren-like birds taking baths in rain puddles today. Cute. I put seeds and sunflower seeds in the backyard. I notice the squirrels hog the sunflowers. Everybody's gotta eat.

The fire alarm started beeping on Christmas night. I'd already had my holiday bourbon and soda so climbing up to disengage it was…ha, ha, fun.

With today being Boxing Day, Erica and I decided to tempt fate and go out looking for some bargains. Our first stop was Walgreens. We got there just after noon. By then every sign of Chritmit had been removed and replaced with Valentine’s Day shit. What s disappointment. We ambled over to Target where I was hoping to score some clearance items to slap up on my eBay page. We went to the toy department where they had a 'clearance' sale. All the toys were 15% off. Are you effing joking? 15% is not a clearance it’s a regular sale. Another disappointment. We got home just in time to play bingo in the other building. There were only 10 people there so surely I would win. I did not, but Erica won twice. She won a bottle of hand soap and on the last game, a cover all, a six pack of Sprite while I walked away empty-handed. Yet another disappointment. When we got back to our building, we checked the mail and there was a pink slip indicating we had a box delivered to the other building. I headed back to the office hoping the box was the new pair of Adidas I ordered from eBay. I got there, Douglas dug up my package and it was diabetes supplies. Another disappointment. I am eventually made it home and turned on CNN only to find the “president” had not died yet. The final disappointment of my day. Screw all this I’m going back to bed .

And I'm back!

I'm not really drunk as such, but I've had cider, brandy (on Christmas pudding) and whisky (in a cake) over the last couple of days and so I'm a little bit closer than I normally would be! I hope everyone had a nice Christmas. Mine was fairly quiet but pleasant, with family stuff and a great deal of nice food. Also, books. Lots and lots of books. Working out where to put them will have to wait. Well, a bit, anyway. I did go for a very short walk on Christmas morning, so I was able to get my 365 photo from just outside a cottage on the edge of town.

Today was the annual Boxing Day Tractor Run in aid of prostate cancer research, which is a fun institution that is (as you can see) not quite as aggressively ordered and organised as many events! There were a lot more tractors participating than you see here; I would guess somewhere in the order of 90 to 100, although I lost count. Many of them were decorated with Christmas themes, playing festive music, even blowing bubbles in one case! Load Street (seen here) was closed for four hours to allow the tractor drivers and passengers to have a lunch break.

And very heavy on the dudes. I'm not sure if women don't go into this sort of thing, or if they're just too classy when they do it, and thus don't get onto the playlist. Though I guess it would be strange for lesbians to sing an ode to Jingle Bell COCK. (Emphasis all theirs, and totally unnecessary. We know where the song was going.)

Anyway, in honor of this, I'm posting three belated Christmas videos. The last is Boynton and totally SFW.

In no particular order. This is content I've read and watched in 2025, not necessarily content released in 2025.

Books

1. The Moonstone Covenant by Jill Hammer: f/f/f/f heroic fantasy. This standalone novel about four wives investigating the death of Olloise's parents and ending up in the middle of a political plot is beautifully written, like old-school fantasy.

2. The Sky on Fire by Jenn Lyons: f/f/m heroic fantasy. This standalone novel about a team having to steal a dragon's hoard has an amazing plot and fun characters.

3. On Silver Shores by VT Hoang: m/m urban fantasy with an intersex protagonist. This novel about a half-siren detective and an analyst investigating rebel werewolves gave me intense feels.

4. Sugar & Vice by Allie Therin: m/m murder mystery/urban fantasy. This series about an empath and a specialist investigating murders in a world where empaths are tracked down has the slooooo~west burn.

5. Letifer by TD Cloud: m/m murder mystery/urban fantasy. This novel about a human cop and a vampire enforcer secretly teaming up to investigate serial killings is perfect for fans of Vampire: the Masquerade and Kindred: the Embraced.

6. Five to Love Him by Alexa Piper: m/m urban fantasy. This novel about a hive's mate has the most adorable fluff, as well as a couple of very hot sex scenes. I love stories about beings who have one consciousness and several bodies.

7. [French] Ainsi soient-illes by Auriane Velten: urban fantasy where angels are agender and use écriture inclusive (gender-neutral language) probably invented by the author + a trans female protagonist. If you loved the story of the manga Angel Sanctuary, go for this novel!

8. Everyday Aliens by Polenth Blake: collection of science fiction short stories with many non-binary characters. These brilliant stories are very experimental, told from the aliens' strange POVs, and are reminiscent of Bogi Takács's writing.

9. [Spanish] Herederas de Safo by ‪AM Irún: f/f adventure. This novel about a museum curator and an insurance agent having to recover one of Sappho's amphoras is a nice mix of adventure, humour and romance.

10. The Ministry of Guidance and Other Stories by Golnoosh Nour: collection of contemporary short stories with some f/f, m/m and bi f/m. These modern, even rebellious, stories offer a daily look at the Iranian culture.

I watched a couple of episodes of "Swedish Death Cleaning," based on the book (?). I hated it. I am all too aware that clearing out papers, especially, will be a help to Flo in case of my sudden demise or to myself when I need to move to a more accessible place. I just don't like people telling me that I'll be happier without stuff.
Next week (ie in 2026), the first four of the Nancy Drew novels will leave copyright and venture into the public domain. Those are from 1930. I don't have any of those, but I have the 1931 edition of The Secret at Shadow Ranche and the 1934 of The Clue of the Broken Locket. I read the article about what's becoming available in the new year and could just wander over to the shelf and touch something that will come out of copyright in a year. That coolness probably doesn't extend to keeping socks with holes (that I can't really mend properly).

The Little Engine that Could also becomes public domain next year. I'm a little concerned about what people will do to it.

A story about wishing

I finished up work at midday on 24th December, caught the train home, and walked straight up the hill to meet Matthias for food truck lunch and drinks in our favourite cafe/bar. He had spent the morning trundling around town collecting all the various bits and pieces of food that we'd preordered, and after we returned to the house, I set about enacting my plans for the twelve ensuing days of holiday: cooking, eating, reading, TV, and nothing more strenuous than swimming, yoga, and long walks. So far, everything's gone wonderfully: cold seafood dinner on Christmas Eve, a fantastic roast dinner for Christmas Day (we'll be eating the leftovers for at least the next four days), watching our way through the last season of Stranger Things in the living room lit only by the wood-burning stove, candlelight, and our various sets of string lights, reading nothing more demanding than Rumer Godden children's Christmas books, romance novels, Christmas romance novels, etc. Today we blew the cobwebs away with a 2.5-hour walk through the fens. The air was cold, the sky was clear blue, and the river water was still, and abundant with water birds, and everyone we met seemed relaxed and happy. We finished up with coffee in the market square.

Yuletide has been wonderful so far (initial terrifying moments when the mods somehow manage to open the collection with all author names revealed notwithstanding). I've been working my way backwards up through the alphabet — I do this as I feel most people read in descending alphabetical order and have run out of steam by the end, and I want to ensure authors who wrote for fandoms in the last quarter of the alphabet get love for their work too — at a leisurely pace, being more selective than in previous years in terms of what I choose to read, and I'm having a great time so far. My two fics have been well received by both their intended recipients, and other readers, which is always my main aspiration.

And then there's my own wonderful gift! I have been asking persistently for this fandom, and these two characters for the past eleven years — every single year in which I've participated in Yuletide, plus in several other exchanges as well — and no one ever wrote them, so when I saw what my gift involved, I almost danced around the room with happiness. And the fic itself is the fic of my dreams for these characters, and this fandom. What I always want from fanworks is more of the stuff that drew me to the specific characters in canon, and my author most certainly delivered in this regard: pitch perfect character voices, with a well-crafted little fic that reminded me all over again of all the specific things I love about these two characters individually, and together. I'm so happy!

The sun appeared unexpectedly Thursday afternoon. I was having a nap, and though the brightness leaking around the blinds woke me up I was unable to fully rouse myself, despite a strong desire to open th9ose blinds and lie in the sunlight for a while. Instead I just fell asleep again, and when I finally woke the sky had refilled with clouds. Well, the forecast is promising more sun in a couple of days, so I can get my sunbathing in then.

The news informed me that there was some flooding in parts of the mini-metropolis during the big storm Wednesday evening, just not this part. There were also a few thousand mini-metropolites without power for some time, and I was lucky not to be one of them. One guy died in Redding. There was flooding all up and down the valley, and even more in Southern California. Three people died down there, including one guy who got hit by a falling tree. We got off pretty easy around here, it seems.

We're supposed to get more rain tomorrow, but then the forecast says four entire sunny days in a row will follow. That means the nights will be getting colder. Clear nights let the day's heat escape. Colder nights mean more furnace time, and a higher utility bill. I suppose I can cut back somewhere else. Like tonight I think I'll cut back on food, because again I really don't feel like cooking. In fact I think I'm about to go to sleep again, and shouldn't be sitting at the computer when I do that. Don't want to fall out of this chair and hurt the floor with my empty head.

I had problems getting up this morning, but I think that I got up at 7:30 AM. Had another good breakfast. Great service—I was having problems cutting the pancakes, and a guy showed up with fresh pancakes for me and took the old ones.

Now I need to pack stuff up. Emailed my travel info to my dad. Suitcase packed. Backpack packed except for the stuff that goes in at the last minute (chargers). I’m going to lie down for a little while.

At the airport. Dropped my suitcase off to be checked. It was just under overweight, so I can’t buy anything.

I think that I might buy a meal on the flight. The timing would be right.

Made it to the gate, stopping twice. It was the farthest gate once again. No charger plugs. Or at least, they’re not working. Yay, found a charger that works. I got to the gate so early that they were using it for another flight.

The flight is overbooked. They asked for volunteers to take a later flight for a $1000 voucher. I went up to the podium, although I wasn’t sure how that would work with my checked luggage and the San Diego hotel. But enough people got there before me. I’m on the flight.

Had a large hamburger for dinner. And I slept the rest of the time. Airplane drowsiness strikes again!

In San Diego at the hotel. I want to get some stuff from Walgreens, but it just occurred to me that it’ll be closed. I thought that I ordered two bottles of soda, but just got one. Oh well. I need to order socks from CVS tomorrow.

Had a protein bar. I think that I’m going to go to sleep early because it’s later Chicago time. Not sure about tomorrow. Right now, the idea of going anywhere sounds awful. I’ll see.

Christmas Eve Day!

It was chill for both of us, and we both needed it. Jameson did a little work in the morning but before lunch he was ready to shut his laptop until the new year. He gamed while I wiped my small tenor trombone down and put it back in storage (neither Epic nor Main Street Phil are likely to call again while I'm home) and broke down a bunch of boxes for recycling.

I did a quick dash to Publix for toilet paper, napkins, and apple cider vinegar which I hadn't realized we'd used up. It was 10am and already packed/crazy at the grocery. I was happy to get in and out. I do wish I'd made a plan for dinner because I could've picked up ingredients. But I didn't. Oh well.

After lunch Jameson and I went for our neighborhood walk. It looks like this.
thumbnail_IMG_3189.jpg

But if you zoom in on one section, it looks like this:
thumbnail_IMG_3191.jpg

This is because as we were passing a house on the first cul-de-sac, a big brown chocolate lab came bolting out of a house and ran right up to us, play-bowing and bouncing the whole way! His parents were mortified (he had escaped while they were pulling in groceries) and tried to herd him back in the house but of course he was not having it. We ended up sort of zig-zagging up to their door acting as though we were going inside too, to trick the dog into going in. Hence the zig-zags on our map!

The humans screamed a "thank you!" at us as they quickly slammed the door, and we laughed and walked off. Jameson worked at a vet's office when he was young and his family also owned large dogs. And I've worked at two kennels. We were the right people for this activity :D And what a lovely energetic dog!

The rest of the walk was uneventful, we just chatted about what a crazy year it's been and about our plans for early 2026. Jameson will have a lot of work to do for Disney, a lot of upcoming events that will require his skills. I will go back on tour. We both have things we want to buy. We have plans to invest more in the house (new carpet and tile, a new sliding door for the pool deck.) Once I sell my car I want to buy a second large tenor to stay at home so I don't have to worry about my ONLY trigger trombone getting damaged by an airline. Things like that.

Back home we got showers and had a small snack. My Aunt called and we chatted briefly to wish each other Merry Christmas. I bought some last-minute gifts for everyone...it's one of those lame gift card years. And we ordered tacos for dinner.

Cannot believe that tomorrow is Christmas Eve. As we relaxed in front of the TV (we watched Krampus!) I kept asking myself: do I have everything? Have I missed anyone? Did I do enough? Although that's not what Christmas is about.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Christmas Day!!

I was up at 8 to have coffee and send my lame-o gift cards to family via email.

One of my sisters and my brother and his fiance got flight gift cards, supposedly good for any airline.
The other sister with three kids got a gift card to a nice Italian restaurant, really just for her and her husband and NOT the kids!! They have enough stuff!!
And my third sister got a 5-qt Kitchen Aid mixer, which we all chipped in to get since they're kinda pricey, but we wanted to get her the best one that we could! She was so happy she said she might cry.

When Jameson was up we had cinnamon rolls from a can (sometimes I make them from scratch but not this year....give me a break, guys, I'm a touring trombonist not a 1950s housewife) and exchanged stockings. It was mostly an assortment of candies with a few small toys and gag gifts mixed in. I got Jameson marzipan and Sour Patch Kids because I know he likes those things, and a new Koosh ball (I got him one last year too.) He got me a dark chocolate Terry's orange (I love them!) and some Japanese gummies which, unbeknownst to him, are some of my favorites because they have an amazing texture!

We watched Home Alone 2. Aaah the Twin Towers....and actual phones....and being able to get onto the wrong flight! How things have changed. Then it was time to exchange presents.

Jameson got me three different kinds of sake, some gourmet chocolates (mostly dark, he knows me so well!), and his big gift was gift cards for Uber, Target, and Buc-ee's! I am VERY excited for the Uber gift card since I plan to sell my car.
thumbnail_IMG_3198.jpg

His parents got me a notebook with a funny saying on the front, a watercolor book and paint set, and this really cool little pottery that is supposed to strip herbs when you run the stems through those tiny holes! If it works with thyme it'll be worth whatever they paid for it.
thumbnail_IMG_3197.jpg

My sister Kate sent homemade gifts, which is standard for her and which I adore! This year it was homemade granola (delicious, I ate some right away), spiced brown sugar peach butter, vanilla pear butter, and avocado shea body butter. She had made an herb butter spread also but was afraid to send it (I reassured her that this was the right choice as we are still at 80°F (26.6°C) down here.
thumbnail_IMG_3195.jpg

My sister Raven sent a thrifted shirt, she happened to find a Full Metal Alchemist one for me and a Queen one for Jameson! Good finds!
And Jonah has sent something that hasn't arrived yet.
I never expect or require gifts from anyone, ever...all I truly want is to share a meal with my family members the next time we're together. Everyone was so generous, and I love and appreciate all of these great gifts!

As for Jameson, I got him some bootleg Queen records (he knew these were coming, I bought them for him on tour), a big cast iron griddle pan for the grill, a "Shart Survival Kit" gag gift, a Mountain Dew mystery gift which turned out to be some hideously corny sunglasses, some TikTok-viral rice krispie treats in a variety of crazy flavors, and his big gift was a 3D-printed LEGO wreath! It is not LEGO-official but looks like the real deal, and it comes with lots of attachments. I'll buy him more attachments for other upcoming holidays (St. Paddy's, Easter, Halloween, etc). It is very cleverly designed.
thumbnail_IMG_3200.jpg

His parents got him an ergonomic mouse, the Game Boy LEGO kit, a Funko Pop, and Kevin Malone's chili cookbook. We had weird lunches of leftover half-chewed burritos and stale Christmas cookies, and watched Emmet Otter, then Jameson listened to one of the bootleg records and gamed while I prepped some things for our fancy dinner like the horseradish sauce and the rub for the tenderloin. I also typed up this post, and sorted my MOUNTAIN of candies and treats into my Home Candy Stash Tupperware and my Tour Travel Stash Tupperware. At some point Jameson's parents called and we thanked them for our gifts, and we texted back and forth with our families all afternoon.

In the evening I cooked up our fancy dinner: peppercorn-crusted tenderloin with horseradish sauce, mashed potatoes, lemon zested asparagus, and crescent rolls. It turned out quite good, the beef for once was perfectly cooked and decadent. We are incredibly fortunate to afford a beef tenderloin each Christmas.

And now we have cleaned up the kitchen, put the trash out (fingers crossed that it'll actually get picked up!) and are relaxing with full tummies. I'm so grateful that I got to have Christmas with Jameson.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday: Jameson has a rehearsal for a NYE gig in the morning followed by a massage, and I've got Candlelight at night. I'll probably practice and do a little cleaning or something ahead of that.

Saturday: Spending most of it in Fort Lauderdale, we're taking the Brightline train there to see our friend Lea perform in a local production of Frozen!

Sunday: I think we might actually be free, so I will make us chili and cornbread :)

This Ends in Embers by Kamilah Cole is the second tome in the Divine Traitors duology, about dragon riders and girls who can channel the power of the Gods.

I loved Book 1, but found that Book 2 didn't have enough focus on the relationships (of all types) because the characters were either in different locations or one of them was unconscious/possessed...

There's major f/f, as well as m/f where the girl is on the aroace spectrum.

My son never smiles

He inherited much of his personality from his Mom. He can hilariously funny and is very quick witted but just has maintained the dour demeanor throughout his life which included two marriages (no real causation there, just correlation). But recently every picture I see of him is like this:

The girl is someone he met a while back who lives four hours from him. They have been friends for a long time but, until recently, he has claimed that it is only friendship.

She travelled to my other son's wedding with him and they continued to NYC for a few days there. And that was the end of the friendship and the beginning of something more.

He's going to change jobs, move back to Des Moines, and they are going to share a house. And I expect to see more pictures of him smiling.

Merry Christmas to me.

Merry Christmas!
