Happy Gravy Day to those who celebrate! It's been a bit of a disjointed few days. I'm working right up to (and including) 24th December, so there's the usual mad scramble to deal with the inevitable mad scramble of students and researchers wanting to 'wrap things up before Christmas,' I'm trying to get all the food shopping and Christmas preparation done around that, and to top it all off, both Matthias and I have been sick. He's mostly better now, and I'm on the way to recovery, but the timing was less than ideal.

author_by_night suggested that I talk about the discrepancy between conventional understanding of history (based to a large extent on the experiences of the upper echelons of society), and the realities of ordinary people's lives for the December talking meme, and although I don't really feel qualified to provide a definitive answer to this, I'll do my best.

I've picked up The Dark Is Rising for my annual winter solstice reread, but haven't finished it yet, and have otherwise only finished one other book this week: The Art of a Lie (Laura Shepherd-Robinson), another great novel by one of my favourite writers of historical fiction. This was a page-turning, enjoyable read with all the features I've come to enjoy about Shepherd-Robinson's books: a scammer in eighteenth-century London embarks on a new con job on a wealthy widow, and finds he's picked a more savvy and complicated mark than his usual targets. The book switches perspectives, each time revealing more unreliabilities in its pair of narrators, pulling the rug out from each other and from the reader with every shift in point of view. As always, the author's extensive research and rich evocation of this period in history is on full display — I was delighted to learn more about eighteenth-century confectionery- and ice-cream-making, law-enforcement in London before it had a dedicated police force, and all the various opportunities for scamming and corruption (most of which are essentially unchanged to this day — there was a common 'Spanish prisoner' scam which is identical to today's 'Nigerian prince' scam).

It feels cold in here tonight. It's felt cold for quite a while. We had two days of rain, and the damp is chilling. I've spent a lot of time sleeping. Groceries were fetched Friday, an I forgot to order some things, and the store failed to include a couple of things I did order, and made a couple of substitutions that did not please me, but I guess that's what happens in a world that is falling apart.

I could compensate a bit by turning up the thermostat and making myself warmer for a while, but I got this month's utility bill the other day and it was scary. This hasn't even been that cold a month. I wonder what the January and February bills will be like? Probably horrendous. I don't think I can afford to get warm tonight.

I still haven't eaten Friday dinner, and should probably fix that now. My neck keeps itching, and it's very distracting. I trimmed my hair yesterday, and I don't think I got all the little cut bits off my head before putting on my clean shirt, and the little bits are probably drifting down onto the collar and stabbing me and making me itch. If it isn't one thing it's another, as they say.

Now I will attempt to cook, before the food rots away. I myself will continue to rot away whether I cook or not. But if I eat there will be more of me to rot. It will all balance out in the end.

Tonight in the basement of the Harvard Book Store where the part of the HVAC which replaced the original location of mysteries and crime makes enough industrial noise for me to wear earplugs while browsing, I gestured a choice of directions at a T-junction of shelves to a woman laden with bags in both hands who responded in an immediate tone of cheerful accusation, "You're half a man," and then before I could say anything and see which way she reacted, "Half and half. Cream. I'm just kidding," on which she turned around and left the way she came. Happy Saturday before Christmas?

We went down to Pittsburgh to a birthday party for Dave's niece's little one year old, Bo this afternoon. I dread parties. But this time I acclimated pretty well once we got there. Thank goodness when we first came in the door we were greeted by Dave's siblings and their spouses who were sitting in the front dining room. There must have been at least 100 people there (barely any that I knew) but most of them were in the basement - a huge room. The birthday boy was a very sweet child and it was fun to watch his face while everyone was STARING at him constantly and smiling. He was so good natured. But how weird to have that happen to you - you are the CENTER of attention of all these people, many of them strangers and they are singing a song at you. They gave him a small cake to get his hands in. He wanted to touch the candle when they put it front of him and dad needed to pull the cake away quick. After he licked his fingers he wanted to feed some to his parents. A sweet boy.

I finished watching Touched By an Angel. Now I'm watching Stranger Things. My favorite thing to do right now: sit and watch something on my phone while weaving with the pin loom. I can do that ALL day and not want to do anything else. In the evening I've been making popcorn and drinking cider. I was reading about alcohol and aFib and found out that alcohol can definitely be a trigger. I did not know that before. Many nights before bed I'd have a little glass (about 2 ounces) of brandy to help me fall asleep. So that is a habit that I'm going to quit.

Woke up at 7 AM. Oliver wants food. Fed us all. Nap time.

Had a nice nap. Overslept a little. I’m trying to wake up to get my clothes in the dryer. Oliver is fussing over me, purring. You were fed this morning. No, you’re not getting more food.

Looked at the Chicago Red Line maps. I need to write down the stops before my stops so that I know when to get ready to get off.

I really want to go back to sleep, but I can’t because I need to go to the post office. Maybe I could nap for a half hour while my clothes dry.

Gracie is barking at Oliver. A quiet morning at home.

Hmm. The Mattis post office is open until 5 PM. I’m thinking of going back to sleep for an hour. Or maybe I’ll stay awake and just sit for a while. The dogs are barking loudly. Maybe I’ll stop at Staples and pick up some printer ink. I’m having some shipped to me, but it’s delayed. And I need to go to Walmart.

Cat (Oliver) in my face. He is not shy about getting attention. Lily tends to go off on her own except when she wants food.

No, I’m going back to bed. Oooh, I’m dizzy. I’ll stop at the (closed) post office later to mail letters. Then I’ll go to Walmart. Slept well until Gracie started pushing me off the bed.

Solstice. I had the lights on at 4:30.

The dogs are outside. I’ll feed them and myself and then shower. Got my hat and gloves and a necklace. I’m waiting anxiously for rings. Oh, that reminds me that I need to stop the mail for when I’m gone.

Maybe I’ll submit a Walmart order for tomorrow. I could mail the cards then too; they won’t get there any faster. And I’ll stay home.

Gracie got my new glasses. The dogs are holy terrors. Got them back. Gracie was like, Oh, you’re upset. Yeaaaaah, I am!

Fed us all. Started reading the book about the making of The Princess Bride. It’s interesting.

Got a recycling bin into the hallway to the basement. I kind of want to go back to sleep, but it’s too early. I’m feeling too tired to do much though. I could submit my Walmart order. I should do some packing. Maybe I’ll post.

Ordered stuff from Walmart, including a wireless trackball to use with my new travel laptop. I should go to sleep early and get up early because I'll have to get up at the crack of dawn on Tuesday to drop the pets off. But I'll go pack some stuff.

So I may have been a little...over ambitious in purchasing eggs and butter and expecting it all to fit into my tiny apartment-size fridge. I did get all of it in there, but there was literally no room to let orange rolls rise overnight so I knocked that off the list. Maybe I will do them for New Year's morning instead.

I also had an unfortunate start to the fig cookies. I made the filling yesterday and I might have put too much cocoa in as I thought it was the bottom of the container so I just dumped it in and well, there was more than I expected in there. *hands* It's fine. Then when I made the dough earlier, it smelled weird. I think maybe the Crisco had gone off? Idk, but I threw out what I'd made and did it again with the newly opened can of Crisco and it smelled correct, so I didn't really get to make cookies this afternoon as planned, but I might make some after dinner, which is how we did it when I was a kid - every night for the 2 weeks before Christmas we were in the kitchen making fig cookies.

I did marinate the pork country ribs last night and they are now in the oven roasting, so that at least is on track.

I also watched Wake Up Dead Man yesterday, and I liked but didn't love it? I'm not sure why? ( spoilers )

This is the year-end category where I'm least likely to want to change my answers in the next week and a half, lol, so here we go.

Favorite new songs/albums of the year
- Cosmic Selector Vol. 1 by Lord Huron. Great vibes, a great progression, only one skip (“Digging Up the Past”). Dreamy and sad, suffused with existential horror, just weird enough both lyrically and musically. I wasn’t sure what I wanted from the new album, but this was exactly it. “Who Laughs Last” is probably my song of the year.

- Mayhem by Lady Gaga. When you're sixteen years into your career and can make a banger album like that this fits right in with your classics!!! The first six or seven songs in particular are an amazing run. “Perfect Celebrity” is probably my favorite, but it’s hard to choose.

- All the live tracks from the Oasis tour. I think this is the first officially released live version of Bring It On Down ever, and Wonderwall is the best live version since… idk, the one from Knebworth 1996 maybe? Or maybe ever? And this live version of Slide Away has finally brought me around on that song. Incredible stuff. (Full live tour album when???)

- "Van Horn" by Saint Motel. One of those songs I didn't really appreciate until I heard it live. Great fun. Also a couple of songs off their new album from the spring (as opposed to their new album for the fall).

- New Candys, which I stumbled across on Bandcamp. I got hooked on their single "Regicide", and the accompanying album The Uncanny Extravaganza is ideal "drowning out external noise" work music.

- All That We Imagine Is the Light, the new Garbage album. Some of the writing is a little dodgy, honestly, but the vibe is great. No Gods No Masters is still my favorite, though.

Disappointments
- I wish I liked Miley's new album more than I do. The tracks I like best are mostly her doing Lady Gaga, and that's not really what I go to Miley for.

- I discovered Dorothy Martin of the band Dorothy has gone full born-again Christian and is now giving interviews about spiritual warfare and the like. Bummer. We'll always have ROCKISDEAD, I guess.

Favorite new-to-me songs/albums
- This year I got really into the Monnow Valley and Sawmills versions of Definitely Maybe, which were released for the 30th anniversary last year. In some ways I like them better than the official album, or at least they've made me appreciate the official album more. Sad Song with young Liam on vocals is incredible, and I’m sad the official version left out that great electric guitar (bass?) hook.

- At the beginning of the year I had a month or so of listening almost exclusively to Doechii (mostly Alligator Bites Never Heal) and GloRilla (mostly Glorious and Anyways, Life's Great). Good times. TGIF is an all-timer.

Stuff I was really into for a hot minute and/or that I want to explore further
- Chat Pile and Hayden Pedigo through their collab album In the Earth Again. I love the contrast of the menacing electric guitars and Pedigo's contemplative, melancholy acoustic.

- Ethel Cain, maybe? Or maybe I just like “Tempest” a lot.

- The singles from Charli XCX’s upcoming Wuthering Heights-themed album. Brat didn’t do anything for me, but these are very much my jam. I love when a pop artist goes weird, like she does on “House.” My most anticipated release of 2026.

- That new Rosalia album. I think I need to spend more time with it to fully appreciate it. “Berghain” is a hell of a track, though.

- Jonah Kagen, mostly that single “God Needs the Devil,” which is exactly the kind of rootsy bitterness I like sometimes. However, his full album later in the year gave me bad politics vibes, always a hazard with Americana and country artists, so I don’t know that I’ll explore him further.

Some other favorite tracks from this year
“Problems” by Yonaka. That last bit leading into the chorus for the first time!! Gives me shivers.
“The Fate of Ophelia” by Taylor Swift. This song is NONSENSE but it’s so catchy.
“Lucky” by Renee Rapp from the Now You See Me 3 soundtrack. A classic bop. Apparently it didn’t even chart, which surprises me, but the charts were wacky this year.
“Song for Henry” by Loren Kramer from the soundtrack for On Swift Horses. You know, the angsty heartbreaker song playing over Julius and Henry’s first sex scene.

Old Favorites - stuff I already loved and continued to listen to a bunch in 2025.
Kendrick Lamar! His Super Bowl show reignited all my enthusiasm. I watched that thing so many times. This coincided with my Doechii/Glorilla phase at the beginning of th eyear.

Miley Cyrus's older stuff, especially her 2023 album Endless Summer Vacation. I’d have said Plastic Hearts was the one I really loved, and yet at this point I think I’ve actually listened to ESV more times. I guess maybe it’s the right mood for more situations than Plastic Hearts. It kind of wears down towards the end, and I find the last two songs unlistenable, but until that point it’s a basically flawless execution of the thing it’s choosing to be.

Oasis, lol. They were my top artist of the year yet again. Mostly the Definitely Maybe anniversary release and the live tracks, as mentioned above, but also according to Tidal I listened to the Knebworth 1996 live album a lot. I don’t even remember this.

Best lines - New or old, on their own or combined with the music:
- I got a burning feeling deep inside of me / And don’t know where to put it (“Who Laughs Last” by Lord Huron)

- You said you really don’t dream anymore (“Life is Strange” by Lord Huron)

…I probably just need to do a whole post about this album, huh. Does anyone else here listen to them?

Woke up a little after 7 AM. Got in the shower early and got my makeup on for our holiday celebration this morning at work.

The White Elephant gift exchange was fun. I "stole" a bobble-head of Jane Austen, which would be great for my library room, and wound up with it. That got me wondering if there are bobble-heads of other famous authors. There are on eBay! I foresee a collection.

I emailed in sick for a half-day because I was dizzy and took a nap. Slept for an extra hour than I had intended.

My singing lesson was amazing. We were doing warmups when she told me to imagine that I was a stereotype of an opera singer singing Wagner. And my voice completely opened up! It had some power to it! We were practicing Christmas carols because I didn't have anything that I needed to practice, and she told me to sing with that voice. So I did. She said, "You found your voice!" She is worth every penny that I pay her. I've learned more with her than I did with several teachers before her.

Fed us all. I want to go to bed soon so that I get up early and get to the post office.

Jan and I were going to go to Paint and Sip this afternoon but cancelled. It's snowing. Not like a blizzard or anything like that but it just doesn't look inviting to be out there driving. Windy.

The windbreak plastic that Dave and I put up around the northwest sides of the chicken run last night doesn't go clear to the top of the wall. I figured that not much snow would come in up high by the overhanging roof but I was wrong. There's still some snow coming in. I might cut some more plastic and fill in at the top.

The goldfinches are very busy at the feeder. A Flurry of Goldfinches. The proper name for a group is a Charm of Goldfinches.

It snowed about an inch today. Dave and I walked the dogs to the creek before it got dark. Most of the previous snow had melted with the recent rain so the creek was high, and the snow we got today wasn't too deep for Rainy.

I like writing letters. I also like sending greeting cards. I know I have holiday cards left over from past years, but I couldn’t find them in a quick look, so I bought a couple of boxes of cards. Normally, that would mean that the leftover cards would immediately show up right on top of other piles of stuff, but that hasn’t actually happened yet.

At any rate, I am intending to write holiday cards in the next few days. If you would like to receive one from me, please message me your address. Don’t assume I have it from a past year.

Legibility is never guaranteed, though I will try. However, I did get C's in penmanship in elementary school.

Also, in the unlikely event that I do run out of cards, you may get one of my famous February letters instead.

Yesterday (Thursday) was very busy.

I met up with Jessica for coffee and conversation (and to pick up postcards for the Women’s Storytelling Festival) in the morning. Apparently the secret to getting a table at De Clieu (a very good coffee place in Old Town Fairfax) is to go there on a weekday at 10 in the morning. We also talked a lot about books.

Then I ran over to Wegman’s for groceries. I’d have liked to have picked up some inari for lunch but the sushi section was fairly empty that early in the day. I did get most of what I needed, but forgot to look for marshmallow fluff. By the way, they have their Chanukah candles on sale, so I bought a box of the taller ones I like.

I managed to get home just before crafts group started. Unfortunately, I discovered I’d made a mistake in my Tunisian crochet afghan, so I had to frog a row and redo it. I also learned that Mauritius is now apparently a hot spot for modern dance. (One of the coordinator’s sons is a dance teacher and has been offered a job there.) It was, in my opinion, one of the most boring countries I’ve ever been to, but I was there back in 1998. They do have nice botanical gardens and an interesting national museum, but they also have an overdeveloped resort tourism industry, in my opinion.

There are a bunch of household things I should have done and I should have taken a nap as I had gotten up too early and been unable to get back to sleep. But, somehow, I didn’t manage to do any of that. Oh, well, I did manage to sleep in a bit this morning.
