Just came up from the basement, where C. & I were cowering until the tornado warning expired. In the old days a warning meant a tornado was spotted; from what little I caught on the TV before heading down below, it sounds as if now/here it means the conditions are right for one to be produced. What I know as a watch. The radio (in the basement) wasn't much use---no FM was talking about the weather, except one line from the middle-of-the-night guy at WEMU, and I could barely get AM stations. So few are really local, anyway, any more.

It's still pretty lightning-y out, but C. just didn't want to stay in the basement any more. And neither did I, to tell you the truth. But dang if I didn't turn off the computer, grab the fuzzy one & the phone, and race down the stairs as soon as I cognized what that siren sound was about. You can take the [livejournal.com profile] fflo outta Kansas, but you can't take the Kansas outta [livejournal.com profile] fflo.

Now there's the romantic combo of thunder and the train whistle out there in the semi-distance.

I thought a tornado watch meant that a tornado had formed and so you had to watch out for it, but then again I could never keep watch/warning straight. They shouldn't have used alliteration.

Yeah---like the admonition not to give two main characters in a short story names starting with the same letter, so's not to confuse yer reader.

A warning's definitely the more severe---the GO TO YOUR BASEMENT one. I think the neuvo touch may be that they now sound one when they see a certain rotation in the storm radar. So more than a storm that might well produce tornadoes---a storm that looks as if it might specifically be about to sprout one or more.

Where are all those lj meteorologists...

Yeah, it was the same in Nebraska, that watch/warning thing. Good instincts you got there, girl, grabbin' the kitty and hitting the basement. I would have done the same thing. (and R probably would have done what my dad used to and gone outside to watch. hh)
