sunday afternoon

may get my butt out of the house in a little bit. may not. we shall see.

youssou n'dour last night was really good. transporting, even. eventually even most of the mezzanine was dancing. so glad [livejournal.com profile] shmizla (pretty much) drug me there.

earlier in the day she'd seen a bumpersticker:

IF YOU CAN READ THIS, THANK A TEACHER
IF YOU CAN READ THIS IN ENGLISH, THANK A VETERAN

or was it "A SOLDIER"? either way, an accomplishment in pithy ign'ance. simultaneously stupid on multiple levels.

later i came up with this (variation on a theme) idea for a bumpersticker:

        FREE YOUR ASS AND
   YOUR MIND WILL FOLLOW

or is it more an idea for a religion?

i wonder whether "lord love a duck" comes from a particular concept in theology.

I love Youssou N'Dour.

A South African friend of my German ex-roommate's best friend living in Italy introduced me to him when I was staying in Rome. It was a funny situation, the three of us together under international pretenses. The three of us didn't share a common language, so when all together we had to translate for each other. What resulted was an unruly amalgamation of three languages (Me: English and German, my ex-roommate's best friend: German and Italian, and the South African: English and Italian).

Anyhow, she introduced me to the Youssou N'Dour's album with Birima on it. I still listen to it, though I've never heard any of his other music, nor was I aware he toured in the states. It's nice to know there are other people with such eclectic tastes out there.

it was "veteran."

my other favorite of the season:

there is room for all god's creatures.
right here, next to the mashed potatoes.

I think I've told you about the best bumper sticker I've seen lately. I really want one.

WHAT WOULD SCOOBY DOO?

Mighta been just one "O" on the "DOO," but I'm not sure. In any case, I love it!

I like this one:

4 OUT OF 3 PEOPLE HAVE
TROUBLE WITH FRACTIONS

(Saw in the other day; I think it was Dave who mentioned it elsewhere around here recently.)

thanks :)

that whole household business is really annoying.

i think we should all move in together and then our costs would just go all the way down. how's that?

[identity profile] sprig5.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
OK--but we have dogs AND cats. anyone have a newt or something else?

[identity profile] shmizla.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe we could get a parrot or something. that should make for endless entertainment (bird--cat--dog etc.)

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
your mentioning a parrot reminded me of the mildly dirty joke [livejournal.com profile] squirrelykat's buddy told the other night, and that reminded me of the horrible joke the "gentleman" at our end of the table told... the one that left all aghast. or nearly all. or all? or all but him, anyway?

anyway, i'm thinking some houseplants. i'd like to branch out (or back) into houseplants, i think. if small-scale.

yeah. i remember saying "what!??" and he wouldn't repeat it. i guess somewhere in the deep recesses of his brain he may have understood what a nasty thing he had just released into the world (or revived or something--someone had obviously told him the joke before, so there are others out there who think it's funny).

house plants good. i just realized today i had neglected one of mine (a dozen leaves fell off a palm, sadly; but it's a bushy one).

there are others out there who think it's funny

*shudder*

they have these scooby yoga mats where i do yoga, which say

DOO YOGA!

:)

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
wow. really? that's so not the hardcore thing i imagine in that place.

[identity profile] shmizla.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
i think these are meant to be kids' mats, but i've used them a few times. it's kinda fun :)

there's a lot of ambivalence about being hardcore and being 'relaxed' at the same time. i think the goal is an entirely counterintuitive one by 'western' standards, to relax by exerting yourself completely, that is, to understand what happens when you just do things rather than make them happen.

i think this is the 'meditational' aspect of the practice, in the sense that two thai women (whom i taught english) explained it to me: that you always only do one thing at a time, and that thing only, and you let yourself be 'occupied' by it, to the degree that you know no other things and see no other things but that one. so, for example, you don't eat and watch tv. you only eat. etc.

in this way, you don't dwell on what you could have done before, and you don't anticipate what will come at you in the future. you just deal with what you know and can do, because neither past nor future do you have any control over. i wonder if this last sentence is grammatical.

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
grammatical, yeah. unconventional enough in word order as to be arguably not smooth, but who am i to talk of such a thing.

the relaxed thing reminds me of talking to gwen & co at your party about the mind-blowing stuff i got from kundalini yoga breathing exercises. talk about counterintuitive.

the meditational focus & singularity of focus stuff reminds me of sex.

as it well should. if you can't be present for that, then there's something profoundly wrong going on.

you may not wish to address it, though, because it might make your head explode. rather, you may want to offend those who think that it's important to be there at least for a few things in your life, with a few people, on a few days.

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
thank god i'm not that guy. or girl.

[identity profile] shmizla.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, the jesus christ of nazareth and such. :)

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
hey, i've heard of him. what film was he in again?

bad santa is coming out, o. i don't know about tonight.

[identity profile] shmizla.livejournal.com 2007-12-13 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
is there going to be a sighting? or should i say 'witnessing'?

i'll give you a call before yogification...
