fflo: (on the road)
[personal profile] fflo
The heat has returned.

It's Monday night. Kittens romp. The two bigger ones get snipped in the a.m.

I watched the end of an unfortunate choice of film from the library. Nuts. Streisand. Really ridiculous. But, I dunno. I'd watched the beginning. And, I dunno.

Got to be token dyke today, a little. "Got" not the best choice of word there.

The black kitten just walked across the keyboard and changed the icon for this post to my "on the road" one. What the hell. Stet. It's a good suggestion. My new horoscope says "stop making an extreme sacrifice you've been doing for a long time. The gods no longer demand it of you; it serves no holy purpose; and there's a milder and more useful sacrifice you can make instead." Is the give-it-up sacrifice not getting out of Dodge? Kinda want it to be something else. Moreover, what's the milder and more useful sacrifice? The question is whether to speculate from a place of desire---as one might be said to be doing with interpretation via wishful thinking. Which, I kinda figure, is Brezsny's bread & butter. I mean, that's hypnotism, sussing out what's wanted in the heart, or getting you to suss it out yourself. All the vague (and vaguely deep-sounding) astrologer needs is a reader who wants to be optimistic, despite the myriad reasons one might have not to be.

Speaking of stet (I was speaking of stet up there somewhere): who wants to give a shout-out to [livejournal.com profile] scrawlspace, new in these parts? Hello, scrawler. You should check your horoscope. It's a good one this week.

'Sonly droppin' to 72 overnight. Rats. In two days, though, it'll be mild, when I'm outside at a ballgame instead of pretending to work. Er, I mean instead of working my arse off, as I do by the minute all day long when at the office.

What would I play if I were on UREZ, I-95 Radio tonight? Got no music on at all right now. WTF. Let us correct that situation forthwith.

Expression to ponder: ridden roughshod over. To ride over roughshod. Like that one? I rather do.

Alright, I'll play ya'll a song. Or two. Two songs (sort of) about men. But not really. Really it's all about the women. You feel me, sistahzz? (Lemme hear y' say: "Always!")

  .mp3  -->   "A Guy is a Guy" -- Doris Day (1952)
.mp3  -->   "It Must Be Him" -- Vikki Carr (1966)

(The noise in the Vikki Carr dies down after a bit.) (The Vikki Carr record belonged to my father.) (The Doris Day song is from the second vinyl copy of her Greatest Hits I bought, cuz [Prof.] Bob Day "borrowed" the first one & wouldn't give it back. The bastahd.)

Hey, maybe the unnecessary sacrifice is simply not having high speed internet access. And cable. And a new mattress. And a fixed-up bike. But not air conditioning. No air conditioning is a good sacrifice, I'm pretty sure. Just not so much on a few nights here and there.

Dang. Just remembered again: I kinda need to do the deck. I am so not into doing the deck.

Miserably hot here too. I'm staying up late to transcribe this interview with a buyer for a vitamin company (not as dull as you might think), and am drenched in sweat at freakin' midnight.

I'm going to reward myself by downloading that Doris Day track once I hit the ten-minute mark on this interview. (Vikki Carr comes at the twenty-minute mark.) Thanks for posting them! I hope things cool off and you have a relaxing night!

Thanks, Will! Similar wishes to you. Or "simular," as I've decided I'm gonna spell it now, when not spelling professionally. ;)

Plug/plow away, and good luck. Me, I'm gonna step in and out of the shower and lay down in front of a fan as soon as I stop drippin'.

p.s.

I like "simular" too. I think it would be fun to say aloud.

Hee. It is. :)

As for Scrawlspace, the "new in these parts" makes me guess she's the copy editor who's sitting where Robin used to sit? (I'm totally blanking on her name, which is shameful because she seemed very nice... Too late to summon names, I guess.) Yes? No? It's a fun handle regardless!

not quite, CWW! gave me a chuckle, though, lemme tell ya. another hint: the person is new in lj/blog space, but not new at MR. though responsible for many of us being there... and, uh, has a four year-old son, and a husband called george? ;)

scrawlspace-- what a fabulous username. thank you for introducing me to shmizla as well.

did you do the deck? what did you do to it? mine has never been done. a wisc relative told me that if you've never done it, you don't have to do it, but then a maryland friend told me that if you don't do it, carpenter bees or something like that will drill holes in it and make nests. is this a geographical diff? 'cause i just was never intending to do my deck. and anyway, my deck is illegal, so i figure eventually it'll have to be replaced.

lord, i've only begun to think about the deck. gotta cut back stuff around it, power wash, probably scrub & sand a little, and then finish. house inspector said it wouldn't have had to be done, since it's made of cedar & redwood, if the previous owner hadn't powerwashed it before putting it on the mkt. but its natural protection is now lost. there's also pressure-treated wood, which doesn't have the same maintenance demands.

there've been two winters since i did the thing the first time (not terribly well, and not including the railings).

your deck is illegal, huh? i don't know what that means.

i don't feel so much like (i'm) house people this year. or tonight, at least.

i know what you mean! sometimes the thought of being "house people" is overwhelming! take me this weekend, for example. [this lj has been interrupted by zeus coming in to make himself known--by implication, it's breakfast time. both dogs have now had their breakfasts.] this weekend--lo, for the past 2-3 weeks--i have not been the owner of a backyard. [well, technically, 2 mortg co's own it. but they're not going to cut the grass.]

well, the deck is connected to the house, maybe missing a set of pylons or beams or whatever you call 'em right next to the house. the home inspector said don't have more than 4 people plus table out on the deck at one time. but the fence guy looked it over and said it is bolted into some major piece of wood in the house and he thinks it would be fine. however, he didn't have to sign off on that statement. i think my deck is pressure-treated wood that has never been treated or washed. so maybe i'll just "inspect visually" for insects and otherwise leave it alone. executive decision made.

have you thought about sealing the deck? how often would that need to be repeated?
