[Poll #954864]

I was a "smitten" gal for the longest time, but lately/suddenly I'm "besotted", fer sure. You?

Smitten is such a nice word. Sometimes it's nice to use one that's just a little more sloppy.

i think smitten has been a little spent lately. i think besotment has some more life to it these days.

I have liked smitten for its understatement & only-slightly-coy feel. But I agree that the commonness of it any more has both watered it down & increased its coy factor.

Also I like the sense of besottedness as an intoxication kind of thing that comes over your whole self as if in the blood. Vs. the smiting, run through as if by weaponry that kills ya. I mean, you can recover from besottment.

i wonder if "recovery" is a good "paradigm" for it, as in, i don't know that being profoundly suffused by something is a good defense against transformation. sort of like jaundice, only you think better of it while it's happening. when it stops happening, you still have liver damage, or some good memories, as the case may be.

not to rain on the parade at all, just comparing metaphors...

the best parades just keep going happily in the rain

I prefer the etymology/alternate meanings of besotted, but I prefer the sound of the word smitten. Really I think there must be some better word out there that I could appreciate both aspects of.
