According to this IMDb piece, Dreamgirls did even better than expected yesterday. It also cites L.A. Weekly as identifying the film's target audience as "African-Americans, gays and upscale whites." The gays cuz it's a musical? Cuz, if that's it, I think they must mean the queer men more than the whole Family. You know, stereotypically.

should we read this to mean that, against intuition, the "upscale whites" are "culturally like" "gays," are like "african-americans," or aspire so to be?

that would be quite exciting indeed, being that "gays" and "african-americans" aren't commonly thought to be in the vanguard of models of social desirability.

Wow...I'm pretty much the opposite of their target audience. But I'm dying to see it.

i think the gays and african americans (and gay african americans) are the show's biggest fans anyways. least, that's all i see when it plays the opera house.

Speaking of playing the opera house, I saw the trailer for an upcoming Tyler Perry movie that looked all serious and sorta mainstream. I remember wondering about the playwright and the audience/circuit was when the ads for his over-the-top campy plays would come on TV in Baltimore, talking of their reception in other cities and showing crazy clips. I knew he wrote that recent bestseller with the earring admonition, but I was a little surprised to see that preview. Made me wonder if I've been missing out on a good hunk of his career.
