Does every city have artistic graffit except mine? Everyone else seems to be able to find and take pictures of such things, but the only graffiti I ever see around here is scribbled words that mean nothing or are illegible.

Williamsburg, VA, doesn't. Or at least it didn't when I lived there some years ago. My favorite graffiti there was on the back of our 7-11, where someone had scrawled, "Punkers Unit." Never knew for sure if the writer meant to tell punkers to unite or was making a reference to some group of punkers. Did he/she leave out an "e" or an apostrophe? The world may never know.

Maybe behind the 7-11 was the headquarters for the local punkers.

Gee, nobody ever stencils dulcimer players on the backs of speed limit signs.

My favorite A² stencil graffiti were a series of Mickey Mouse faces that showed up at seemingly random places on downtown sidewalks. Only the white faces, with the black heads and ears left off. I wasn't sure if the artist was caught before he or she could finish them, or if it was some minimalist highbrow commentary on pop culture.

Then one evening I walked past them after dark.

They had been placed so that when double parking meters were illuminated by streetlights, they cast their shadows as perfect Mickey Mouse ears.

Near where I live in Brentwood, MD, there are no cool examples of picture graffiti, but, alongside the usual gang graffiti, there appeared the following during the last election:

SMOKE CRACK
WORSHIP SATIN
VOTE FOR BUSH

That's pretty cool.

Maybe I oughta document more of A²'s stencil graffiti here. There's some cool stuff. None of it pleases me quite so much as did the now-gone (cuz the building burned down) ghostly Pacman guy (logo of local record co, I think it turned out to be) next to JEEBUS LOVES YOU.

But you live where Disco Dan does his thing. (Disco Dave?) And where the spaces where SURRENDER DOROTHY were sand-blasted out still call up that most fabulous of graffiti.

Not to mention the ongoing battle (I hope it's still ongoing) to tag, after "Welcome to Baltimore" on the Parkway, "Hon".
