[Poll #726257]

I'll post a range & average once I've got some votes in. Here I mean how many miles before the car (effectively) dies are a lot of miles to get out of a vehicle, in your estimation, off the top of your head. I'm curious!

In the past, I would have said 100,000 miles, but when I teach astronomy and get to the part about the ancient greeks calculating the distance to the moon, I ask my students if any of them has ever had a "moon car," invariably one or two of them have.

Well, I'd always been told 100,000 by people of my dad's generation. And that is about when the Ford Escort that we bought new in 1989 or so died--at about 100,000 miles. But it was, after all, an el-cheapo car, I suppose, as cars go. The Nissan had at least 200,000 on it when it died--something like 230,000, I think.

We've heard that the Subaru should get to 200,000 if we take care of it (which we've been doing), but our mechanic also told us that at around 100,000 they (the Subaru Legacys) are prone to this slow oil leak that ours seem to have developed, which would apparently cost an arm & a leg to fix. Right now, we're at 90,000 miles on that car, BTW. We may actually trade this one in before it dies, though. That would be unusual for us, and it seems very extravagant.

Anyway--the short answer would be I think it depends on the kind of car and the care it receives.

Great answer! So, will you pick a number for the poll, just to put your 2¢s; in? As in, what number is the lowest that might have you say "That's a lot of miles to get out of a car"?
