Brill:  the Cadillac of Reel Mowers

the Brill

Looks good
Self-mulching
Burns no gas
When yard has few sticks, provides aerobic exercise (you can get up some speed)
Is not noisy & obnoxious, like power mowers
Lets you smell all the amazing smells that are outside tonight, May 4, 2006
Rhymes with "Brazil"

That was fun.  And I did pull some garlic mustard afterwards, though not where I set out to.

I really am not a dumb fucker for not finishing, say, cleaning out the fern beds completely before moving on to something else; or for choosing the whack-o border restoration project, along with the bare patch patching, instead of myriad others; or for not having gotten to that one renegade bush earlier; or for deciding to mow when I didn't really need to yet, instead of some other more worthy outdoor thing I mighta done instead.

My mind continues to be blown...  Who'da thunk.  How could Who have.  Thunk it.  And a Vo Vo Vo-De-Oh Doe.

We got one of those old school push mowers near the end of the season last year. Not sure if we have the same model, but I am very happy with it. I love not smelling like gas and motor oil after cutting the grass. Plus, I'll be able to mow on "ozone action" days:)

mower thoughts

hey, y'all. i got the neuton mower. runs on a battery. just used it for the first time friday. it's as powerful as a gas mower, which i need because i have a lot of weeds (tried a reel mower last year, but the weeds would pop back up), but its cutting width is only 14". a little quieter than gas mower too. no fumes or gas to deal with (important to me). It's easy to take the battery out. That way, since I don't have a shed, and this thing really needs to be stored inside, I can easily carry the mower in and out of my basement, since the mower weighs about 33 lbs w/o the battery. i think that you can't let the grass go as long with this mower--i.e., with a gas mower you can let it go longer and not spick up the smaller sticks, etc., but this mower might not be able to take that.

It's certainly true with the reel mower that you can only let the grass get so long... so I borrow my neighbor's gas mower often. Or I have. This year I'm showing all the signs of being much less negligent of the yard, but there are so many other areas of interest out there, I may well let the grass get a little too long now & then.

You might be amazed at the state of the thistle patch, [livejournal.com profile] sprig5.

Cutting season 2002

When we first moved down here to Texas we bought a reel mower. I heard somewhere, quite falsely, that they worked great on *&%#@!^ bermuda grass. We used it most of the summer but broke down and bought a regular ol' gas mower by the fall. Bermuda is too thick (and spreads everywhere and is a giant pain in the ass). Plus you do have to mow before it's too long - too often. We still use it sometimes to touch up on the sides of the house where the grass is sparse. Works great and stays sharp. I'd highly recommend it for northern grasses like fescue and bluegrass. Anyone know anything about rechargable or battery mowers?

I sure don't. Might be kinda long into the life of this entry for anybody else to read it now, but you never know.

I do borrow the neighbor's gas mower still, and will, I imagine, on those occasions when I get behind in upkeep. There's so much to do in the yard, and when there are days and days of rain I need to use the off days for lots of stuff. Plus sometimes I just put off the grassy areas, and I'll probably continue to be that way, off and on. My enjoyment of yard work is about meandering around in it, and going with the flow, not about disciplined maintenance and appearances.

Know what kind of grass seed I put in? I don't! It's "Sun and Shade", on sale at Ace Hardware (or Ace Barnes, as we call it here---the Barnes family runs it).
