Bobby Hill is the character pictured in the icon---from the TV show "King of the Hill," by the guy(s) who did "Beavis and Butthead" (originally for M-TV). "King of the Hill" can be hilarious at times, and I think its head is largely in the right place. There are lousy moments, mostly sentimental and overly sympathetic with or forgiving of the father figure (I seem to remember that [livejournal.com profile] homovegetarian wouldn't/couldn't watch.). It's set in Texas, and it does get at a lot of what's bizarre and despicable about the "national" culture down there. (Did you know Lone Star is the "national beer of Texas"?)

Bobby is the one child of the central family of characters. He's pre-pubescent or early pubescent (and static in age, I reckon) and drives his father crazy with his interests in non-manly things, and insufficient interest in or competance at many manly things. He also has eclectic tastes such as a passion for comedic performance traditions of the NY Jewish Catskills-y ilk. One striking thing about him (and the most unrealistic) is that stuff just doesn't get to him. That is, he is yet utterly without negative self-consciousness, despite having many more reasons than the average freak pre-teen in Texas to be wracked with the stuff. He doesn't seem to suffer from any of yer other run-of-the-mill psychological traps, either. He's also confidently drawn to others and open and trusting and all kindsa innocent like that. Unburnable. Some kinda super hero, practically, to my mind (though I doubt he's broadly taken that way).

Sometimes I stick his picture on an entry cuz it's got some inner child feel to me. He looks a little dumbstruck in this "shot," but the inner child he represents is a strong one, unlike what people usually seem to suggest when they refer to inner children---vulnerable, wounded versions of us whose needs still cry out within---that kinda thing. Not that we don't have shit like that. But surely some part of our inner kid is BobbyHillish. (Has BobbyHillity?)

This is hilarious...I never thought that about Bobby, but you're right....If you ever read The Tao of Pooh, Bobby Hill would be the Pooh-like "uncarved block" The childish innocence of being able to ask "stupid quesitons" and not think they are stupid...learning for learning's sake...not trying to become something he's not...just exploring the world and it's possibilities.

oh...and btw...BOOH!

Boo to you, too, Drew!

The Tao of BobbyHill. Why not? Did you see the episode in which he's suspected of being the next something-or-another, spiritual Buddhist person of note?

ah yes....that was a great episode....worked off of the same beginning story line of the movie Kundun. If you haven't seen that...you might have missed some of the references, but definitely a worth-seeing movie.

So whatchya been up to? It's been so long since I've hung out with you and d&k. We should get together for cards sometime soon. I'll be out of town soon for the holidays, but after that would be great.

Have a super day.
