I could go on about why I like their team, but one big factor is that their manager is good ol' Bob Melvin, who was an Oriole during my favorite baseball time.

Catchers are so often both the brains and the heart of a team.

He's an old guy now, and has had a lot more career than he'd had then, both as a player and as a manager.  I love whenever they cut to his plain serious face in the dugout, and I love that he's had success, and I love feeling connected to a team now partly through this throwback to the good ol' days.

He had such a short time here with the Mariners but still he's one of my favorites of all the different managers we've had. I saw him once on an episode of House Hunters - he and the wife du jour were buying an apartment in NYC.

i don't remember details. but he came off ok. i do have the distinct impression the wife on that show might not still be mrs. melvin but i could be wrong.

since i want both the yankees and astros to lose, looks like i'm a Pillies-ian.
