Let's go back a little and look at what is sort of a forerunner of the generic place card (as well as of the "large letter" card):  the glitter card.

It was kind of a thing for a while, apparently, to glue glitter to cards.  Made a nice way of indicating Christmas decorations, or just adding some sparkle to a view.

(I don't know what's up with the train decoration. Oh, and click for bigger, if you like.)

Lots of times people wrote messages with them, though.

This one looks like how a serial killing slasher would style the letters.

Will was romantic.

Finally, here's a glitter card with a little envelope glued on, in which you could put a special tiny letter. All for the postcard rate!

You know that kind of thing wouldn't fly now. Just like the old leather postcards wouldn't make it through the mail. Plus they'd probably not be real happy about the glitter, and the glue & glitter could smear all over before the card got to ya, if it got to ya.
