Combine Harvesters

I remember those days. That is when the combines had headers that were only 16 foot wide. Now that they are 30 feet wide they have to be pulled behind on trailers. Now one combine can do as much in a day as all for of these pictured.

The pickup trucks are from the late 1950s. The combines are McCormick brand later bought by International Harvester. After the machine was unloaded the side of the boxes which were stored under the combine would be installed and the truck would start the job of hauling grain from the field. Each of these trucks would haul about 250 bushels of wheat.

I am sure they had no cabs, not air conditioners and no radios. Drivers were exposed to the sun all day long and the chaff would get down your shirt and itch.

Notice the board going from the header to the top of the bin on the last combine. It was there to help the wires over the machine as they went down the road.

I love this comment. :D

I was drawn to the fact that I knew I was looking at a combine (accent on the COM), like my Great Uncle Walter had on his spread, plus the nice old pick-up being in there, and the unusual-seeming collection of multiple combines lined up for/from transport like that. Had no idea about IH having been McCormick, or any of these other cool details you shared. Thanks for taking the time to share! Even that real trivia-type thing about the wire-guide for navigating the road! So cool. :D
