Your "inner Mildred" is definitely talking to you these days. But she's not your mother, so you're allowed to tell her to get stuffed (or to fuck off or to just go away or whatever). I'm just kdding--if only it were that simple.

In AA, a lot of people talk about how they can't allow themselves to get "stuck inside their own heads," About what a dangerous place that can be, etc. The suggestion that most of them have for us newbies is that when you find that happening, get out of yourself by doing something for someone else: welcoming a newcomer, calling someone who's having a bad day, helping someone out with a chore or errands, giving someone a ride, or even cleaning up after a meeting. I'm not sure exactly how that translates into the non-AA world, except to again quote Lucy from the Peanuts Christmas special: "Charlie Brown, you need involvement."

Know what I think? What I'm thinking tonight, and thought part of yesterday, and other times this week? I think I'm sad. Very sad. Thoroughly and deeply and not simply but yet very, and plainly, if with half-hearted flourishes of embellishment, sad.

Did I mention deeply? Yeah, I see I did.
