The bow tie must be what makes it look like a 1950's gas station attendant, milkman, or other job that certainly doesn't call for uniforms anymore, and probably doesn't exist anymore. Clearly your friendly neighborhood [insert idyllic profession that you can't imagine anyone making a living at anymore, let alone supportting a family]. He's the sort who would give kindly advice to little Billy while he's making his rounds.
