That reminds me of a funny story from high school: during our English poetry unit, William Carlos Williams came up, and my then-girlfriend giggled and said, "William Williams? What kind of name is that?!" And I blushed and everyone stared at her kind of funny until she said, "Oh... yeah."

Here's for the also-rans

I love Preston! And Iakob. Must admit, they convey definite personality traits. Otherwise, I like Odysseus for the benefits of calling him "Odie," except isn't that Garfield's housemate/nemesis? Scratch that.

Well, it seems to me that no matter what you name him you rather have your heart set on calling him Hambone, so in effect his name actually is Hambone. If you must think of it as a nickname, it seems a nickname easily derived from his original name of Hamlet which had appealed to you on some level, and perhaps did give rise to this Hambone craze? But from your list I like Riley, Virgil and Emmett. If his (nick)name ends up being Hambone I will of course be forced to call him "Moons-over-my-hammy-no-hammy," which is my old order from my Denny's days. That's quite a mouthful.

Riley sounds like a Washington DC area kid's name! or a Washington DC area Labrador's name. Still, it would make a fine cat name.
William Carlos "Hambone" Williams: how about Carlos?
I like Zeb too.
I sense that Hambone will be used though!
I guess I come from the short and sweet pet name school, on the theory that the animal can hear it better and respond to it. Maybe that's less important with cats. But, in that sense, I figure if it has some percussive sounds in it, that can be good too. And all the better if multiple pets don't have names that sound similar.

It almost makes me wanna get another dog, just so I can name it! I wanted and still want a Great Dane, but it exhausted me recently to care for my dog plus an 18-lb dog (A's dog Harper, who is named after singer Ben Harper), but it could be argued that Harper has more energy that most dogs several times his size. (By the way, Harper is quite the romantic, too, as you may have gleaned from my previous comment.) Anyway, those thoughts plus $ make me wait to get a second dog now.
