All the years I’ve lived in Florida, I’ve NEVER been to Key West. Of course it’s an 8 hour drive. And Route 1 begins downtown at Mile Marker 0, not at the sign as you’re leaving the island.

An ex- and I lived a little while in Brunswick, GA, an hour from Florida, and we thought one time maybe we oughta take a trip to the Keys. Then we looked at the map. I mean, that was one long-ass drive. We never did go.

On one big road trip I was deciding destinations as I went, and someplace in the top half of the country I came across a postcard of folks at Big Bend, then about 70 years earlier. Lemme see if I can find one like it....

Well, it was this canyon, but a B&W real photo card from earlier:

So I decided I'd go there. The tip of Texas doesn't look so far away, and I wanted to go to Carlsbad Caverns anyhow. But boy was it a long hot drive through brush to get down there.

I don’t know if you saw the pics I posted a week or so ago of Marfa, TX but it’s on my bucket list. It’s in the middle of nowhere—7 hours west of Austin and 3 hours from the nearest airport (El Paso or Midland). But speaking of the keys, it’s 5 hours drive from Tampa to Homestead. It’s another 3 down Route 1 to Key West. But you have to do it at least once because it’s gorgeous, so I’ve heard. It’s probably best to fly to Miami & rent a car.

Go for it, right?

I haven't flown since before you had to take your shoes off, and now doesn't seem like a great time to return to the air. My drive to Key West from here is... let's see... 22 hours and 53 minutes. Whoa.

I've heard a few things about Marfa, or vaguely recall some art stuff being associated with it. Cool if you do get there.
