And I'm also completely baffled by them. Is that a crescent moon or Father Tim's sickle? I wonder what those bags of 1000 are? Google isn't helping.

I had the same problem with the bags. This motif is common in those peak-postcard early 20th century stuff for New Year's, tho. I think the bags have money in them. And I think it's the moon. In this one there are letters up there, too, looks like --- maybe you wrote a letter to the elf-people in the moon and they brought prosperity?
