Had to get through a real sleepy patch this afternoon.  Somehow kept working.  Seemed to help when I got up to ask T a question, and she gave me chocolate.

Life continues apace.  I went back to chorus.  The cat still has diarrhea but hasn't had to go back to the vet in, like, maybe 2 weeks, or close to it.  Still needs a solid call name, howe'er.  I have a doctor's appt this week and don't feel like getting my shit together to make a list of things to talk/ask about.  My hope there is always to get out without adding any more drugs to the drugs I'm on, although that's maybe kind of a stupid goal.  Not feeling confident about my blood work this time around, having not gotten a lot of exercise this summer, and had some streaks of eating badly, one way or another, or multiple ways.

It's weirdly hot today, but mostly it's harbinger-of-fall time(s).  And the students are back, and the football games are happening, and new copy eds start pretty soon, and the noir festival will be coming up.  I paid so much less attention to the seasons when I was young.  I was, like, season-stupid.  If you asked me what season it was, I would have called up in my mind what month it was, and then figured out what season that month is in, to get the answer.  I didn't just know.  Except maybe that it was summer because school was out.  Even then, I mighta gone through the figurin'.  That's weird, right?

Love the bow tie.

With seasons -- it's been the other way 'round for me. My mother was very intentional about decorating here and there with "seasonally appropriate" things: cornucopia, Easter eggs, beachy themed prints and we spent a good bit of time out doors. In graduate school, for a while, i had an altar and similarly decorated to celebrate the seasons. Between the Bay Area's lack of climate extremes and work, though, i lost track of seasons. My attempts to have "seasonal decor" turned into Yuletide decorations being taken down in June. Once i started focusing on floral photography, i was a little more attuned to windows of different floral opportunities, but holidays always shocked me: it's [season] already?!

Moving back to North Carolina has brought fresh eyes to seasons here. I'm realizing how different the floral seasons are from California: here, the roadsides light up with so many tall flowers in the autumn, after a summer of shooting up to the sky. By February the stalks have mostly fallen over and the rich plant life is forgotten, roots working underground to prepare for the next year. Insects and deer have different patterns in different seasons. Spider season is beginning, when the huge Carolina writing spiders spread even larger webs across fifteen foot gaps and i start leaving the front door waving a golf club in front of me to clear a path.

"Welcome back to seasons," NC is perhaps saying to you (among many other things).

No no-see-'ums come that far north? What about the giant cockroaches, I forget what they're called? I spent three seasons in Georgia once, including the rains-every-afternoon season.

None of those giant cockroaches yet, although as the climate warms.... No-see-ums are around, but more likely to hover around the edge of the lake. We just deal with mosquitoes and a horsefly that pesters me (after i have been working hard in the yard) and our dog Carrie. Ticks were awful our first few years here. I'm not sure what we've done that discourages the: perhaps less deer right up at the house.

In regards to not knowing what season it was - you probably were engulfed in life. Things are faster pace when we're in school. Now in days, you're able to pause, reflect, and enjoy. One of the pluses of growing up <3

I was much less aware of seasons when I was young than I am now, also.

I like the geometry of your tie!

I wish I had a letter of the alphabet who would give me chocolate when I asked her questions.

Daily forced marches keep me in tune with the seasons. And flipped my ratings of Summer vs. Winter. Winter is nicer when you don't have to walk through a mile and a quarter of it every day.
