Well, that's what I though they said, because I knew nothing about the british system of money when I first saw the movie. I thought puffins were the puffy looking things they were feeding the birds.

OK, if nothing else, google informs me that Land of the Lost and H.R. Pufnstuf (OK, I had no idea bout the spelling) were created by the same people.
