What a jaunty angle for a hat.

The words "jaunty angle" were my first thought as well, although the wearer doesn't seem so jaunty.

I'm wondering, is that Charlie Chaplin, sans mustache?

I had this guy up on my cube wall at work for a long time. He seems sad. Maybe shy. It was still back when people didn't generally smile for pix, but his eyes look sad, or at least serious. The one hand in the pocket and the other behind his back--- this is not the body language of the jaunty, despite the cocked hat. But I somehow think he was showing us his dress-up look.

So many interesting dead people out there.

I didn't say he was jaunty, just that the hat is.

What a dude.

The bowler hat has come to be seen a symbol of stuffiness and rectitude but it was racy once.

You remind me of a piece in an old issue of TriQuarterly that I saved cuz I liked it so much--- and now it turns out you can read it online:

The History and Significance of the Bowler Hat

It's a little stuffy, but innarestin'.

Recently I saw some film with maybe Edward G. Robinson's character trying a bowler and seeing if he can pull it off, and it signifying something. And there are all those bowlers in Bob Fosse musicals. The hat's so laden with meanings, it's surprising people can wear one without being weighed down so much they can't stand up.
