The train, not the camera. :) Nor the guy!

There are so many reasons I love this image!

The view camera! The big locomotive! The fantastic composition of leading lines!

It is a pretty great shot, isn't it?

I also like to think that there had to be a camera and person taking this photo. And perhaps there a camera and person taking a picture of that person! I sure woulda snapped one, if I'd been walking by with a camera in my pocket.

I love taking pictures of people taking pictures. This one's extra great because of the question mark-shaped hanger that's still attached to the hat. It makes me think of this person as an anime kitty-character, looking confusedly at this giant waterfall with a symbol of puzzlement over their head.

I love it! That question mark is most excellent.

The way the mist makes the falls all to the right of the person's arm is cool too.

I never noticed that about the composition; it was totally unintentional. Actually, it's probably an artifact of the limited dynamic range of a camera sensor. But that's really cool! Thanks for pointing it out.

Now I can't look at it without thinking that it looks like I whited out the whole background except for that corner.

If the hand were holding some more mysterious-looking tool, it could seem as if the person is creating the waterfall, by applying some magic landscape transformer in a "wipe" sort of move from right to left. :)

I think the effect ends up working really nicely to make what the person's looking at and photographing have this isolated sort of "like a painting" thing, with soft edges and all in the corner there, so that the photographer (in the picture, not you) ( ;) ) is a separate subject against a separate background, and then with that so-cool subtle question mark. The falls could almost be an inset of what someone sees in a telescope or something, like you sometimes see an an inset circle with expansion lines drawn to it--- hard to describe what I mean, but it's an old illustration technique I've seen on postcards sometimes. Like a blow-up insertion.

I know the kind of inset-thing you're talking about.

I love the idea of it being like they are creating the landscape. I wonder if a series of altered photos in that theme would be interesting; people creating the landscapes as they observe them. Maybe I could frame it as an attempt to represent the thought process of photographic composition.
