rotated for your convenience:

to  Freddy Jackson
     Scotland Run
     Malaga, N.J.

Just by chance I found your forgiveness card yesterday - in some advertising stuff I was about to throw out.  More ashes on my head --
Chan & I are going to a 3 day rodeo - & will write when we get back.  Love  Katy

and, drumroll,

Which one do you think is Katy?

I think she's the one on the right. It looks like her hair has been smushed down by all those ashes on her head.

Good question!

Maybe Freddy was at camp and was only going to be there a little longer. If the card even reached him in time. Back then apparently cards from, like, Baltimore to NYC or vice versa could be sent in the morning and delivered in the afternoon, but I don't suppose that remarkable speed applied from one coast to the other. Even with an airplane.

I know I once suggested air mail when my Mom wanted to get a letter to my grandma quickly and I heard a fast and horrified 'what are we? the rockafellas????'

Ha. My folks acted that way about long-distance calls to Grandma. When I was older I thought it must cost, like, $25 a minute, and when I found out it was more like 22¢, I was suddenly cavalierly complacent, and ran up some phone bills before I learned that lesson.

That's 2 votes for her, none for the other one.

I was initially figuring the one on the right, too. Then I questioned myself. But that's probably her. Right?

She's got a lot of attitude. And so does the text. Also she bears a passing resemblance to Kate Hepburn.

There's a certain confidence in the face of the one on the left, too, tho. Maybe partly cuz she's not looking right at us.

What do you suppose "Chan" is short for?

Channing, Chandler- something like that- which assumes it's a surname that's being shortened.

Or maybe the reference is to Charlie Chan. People come by their nicknames in all sorts of ways, some obvious, some pretty recondite.
