Here we have the Scharffenberg sisters:

That's my grandmother Bertha on the left---my mother's mother. Never knew her, I'm sad to have to say. Next I think is Mary, who ended up in Iowa (and did lots of canning), and then in the middle (that solid woman there) is Aunt Louise, whom I'm partially named after. On the right are (I think) Ella and Helen. I don't remember much about those two, except that in their older age they shared an apartment in Sioux Falls, where my brother & I watched roller derby on TV for the first time. I think it was Helen who used to own & run a hotel in Bridgewater, the little town in southeast South Dakota outside of which they grew up.

Aunt Louise is the one you may've heard me talk about. I didn't know her well, but I do know she ran away from the farm to Kansas City, where she bobbed her hair (a scandal back home) & worked as a theatrical seamstress. I recall hearing the implication that she lived "in sin" at least once ---with this guy, maybe?:

I don't know who that fella was, but I know they're cozy together on that bed---an unusual snapshot setting in that era, you gotta figure. Somewhere I've also got a picture of her IN DRAG. In that one her clothes are pretty goofy, as are those of the friends she's with, so it could well have been for a play or something.

When I knew her she was married to Uncle Guthrie---"Guthrie" was his last name, and that's what she called him. I don't know if anybody in the family ever even knew his first name. My folks didn't. I think he was her second legal husband, so I suppose that guy on the bed might be the first---but I prefer to think not. She never had kids. Lived in a house on The Paseo in KC until getting a touch of senility in her 90s and then dying. I remember her having quite a big presence, and as a positive, happy type to be around.

I hope to find & scan that drag shot sometime soon. I'd love for ya'll to tell me you see a queer glint in her eye. She was a bit of an Amazon, for sure---big and strong in her walk, seeming confident and assertive.

Of all my dead great aunts and uncles, Aunt Louise speaks to me most now, in her mysterious ways, and I look to my idea of her for wisdom, for strength in difference. I like to say my folks got what they were asking for, naming me after a rebel---a rebel who was undeniably my mother's favorite aunt.

After Guthrie died Louise hung with a guy who could hot-wire a car. I never thought they were romantically involved, as "Uncle Bill" was much younger and seemed to be more of a family friend, devoted to her & helping out with stuff. But you never know.

I think I might try going by just "Lou." You like?

lou is great, and I would be envious. my parents almost named my agnes louise, and while I really shudder at the thought, it would have been killer to have a nickname like Lou. go for it!

Glad you like it. Maybe I could let special people call me "Lou-Lou."

Nice pics. Lou would be a good nickname. Although I'm still partial to Lisa-Lou.

The scandal! A bed--and they're sitting on it together--bodies touching no less. I think I'm getting the vapors...
What a wonderful picture.
No one in my old family pictures smiles or touches. They do standard I-don't-have-leprosy shots: hands holding arms of chairs, feet flat, back straight, stare straight ahead. It used to look regal to me, but now I wish somebody was playful.

I really think Louise was playful---that's a great word for it. She enjoyed life. I have a feeling she was willing to experiment with it. She certainly made a reputation among the Lutherans of not letting their judgment stop her!

I think my inner Aunt Louise suffered some hemorrhaging from that kick in the stomach last year. (Had to look up "hemorrhage"---never wrote that word before.) (Last week I used "beseech" in writing for the first time. I love when that happens.)

Hey, I miss you, Emiene. I'm crazy with freelance right now, but that can't last forever. Think you might be had for some hangin' sometime in a few weeks? I'd head your way, happily.

I miss you too! I'm involved in a spurt (pun intended) of erotic novel inspiration. It's a love hexagon, I think. Never good at geometry. I hate to ask you to drive out here, but I get leaving-impaired around you. Plus it's my turn to come your way, and I enjoy driving to your place. Maybe we should come up with a safe word for when it's time to go. Me and Alex's used to be "I never much worried about the little things," but that got too hard to work into conversations. It always elicited a "huh?" and then we'd give some lame explanation that made even less sense. How about hemorrhage?
I don't get to write that word often, either. I'm glad you looked it up so I don't have to.

Hey, I'm GLAD you're "leaving-impaired" at my place---I never want you to go. I want you to crash at my place for days, and me blow off work, and just hang. I love the friends who are good at simply hangin', and you are up there with the best of 'em.

During our pre-courting (when I'd come over with her then-gf), H. was always good at just speaking up when it was time to wrap up the evening. I will speak up if need be, rest assured. I learned from her how good it is to know that your host won't put herself out that way: you can then relax & know you'll be informed if it's time to go. Last time, as I recall, you stayed on as my veritable babysitter!

Anyway. Yes. A time, soon. Before long. Hey, I've got an idea... (I'll e-mail ya)

p.s.

Are you shy about sharing the writing-in-progress?

A lil' bit. I considered posting it, but I need to find out how to lock the post for friends-only. I'm so basic with the blog-thing. I haven't even figured out how to paste the cute icons. I have icon envy.

Hey, I can help hook you up in that regard, fer sure. The FAQ pages are pretty good, too. I'd love to see some of what you're putting out (pun intended)!

I'll check those out! How do you find your pics, anyway? Image searches?

Some of them, yeah. The shaking fat ass was somebody else's icon, and I grabbed it from her with permission. There are the generate-an-animation sites, too. The key is that the pic can be only up to 100 pixels in either dimension----so I use Photoshop here at work to make 'em smaller.

Ah-hah, secrets unfold. Well, I've gotta be @ work at 3:30 and I haven't even showered yet. Gotta get ready. Talk to you later, chica.
