On Facebook I've joined an early aviation (1903-1918) group, and there are lots of vintage images like this. And it's kind of crazy-making because the aeroplanes are never quite actual aeroplanes. This one looks a lot like a Bleriot XI monoplane like the one that first crossed the English Channel in 1909. But not quite.

It's like they've gotten the perspective wrong, and/or the proportions, or somethin'. And is that wing translucent?

The perspective is a little better if you read the airplane as going away from you and you are looking from below.

And yes, the wing should be a wee bit translucent, but when you see it as moving away and from below, it doesn't have to be transparent.
