Reminds me of things in biology that branch for the sake of tiny things passing from one side to the other. Like branching blood vessels carrying nutrients to cells, or the branching airways in your lungs to the point where there's enough area for oxygen to enter your blood. Or branching roots to get water from the soil. This is a rare case where you get to be one of those tiny things that passes through the membrane at the gate, and can appreciate how weird it is navigating all the branching channels to get to the gate. Of course, on the aircraft, side, there is branching as well. But airports rarely get so fully fractal.

Ooh, I like this way of thinking about it.

I had a hard time picking an icon for the post, not finding a good one among my choices for what it was feeling like, which is sort of a process or queuing model or optimization problem vs., like, an airport. So I was all abstractly thinking of it, and here you were in the blood and guts of living reality.
