I just completed an OK galley (review) at work with 17 references. Fortunately, they were all in MathSciNet. Guess how many of the papers the reviewer cited have the reviewer as an author?

(a) none;
(b) one;
(c) three;
(d) seven;
(e) ten;
(f) twelve;
(g) all seventeen.

First one with the right answer gets her/his choice of

[1] a copy of the article in question, "The class number one problem for some non-abelian normal CM-fields of degree 48" by Ku-Young Chang and Soun-Hi Kwon (listen up, [livejournal.com profile] upsidedownblue and [livejournal.com profile] anderyn: you're on your honor not to use that info. to cheat!);
[2] a nubby rubber fingertip condom (for easy counting of piles of paper);
[3] 2 Canadian Tylenol;
[4] a vintage triple-striped 2-color DUAL-KOLOR by EMPIRE pencil, pink on one end, grey on the other.

Surely the 'net'll have one of those massive-use outages when word of those prizes gets out...

Sadly, that is NOT correct! Good to see you pop in here, though.

So which prize would you have taken if you'd won?

Alas!

I'd have to have picked either [1] or [4], since I already have access to [2] at work, and I own the American version of [3], which in view of how multinational corporations work is quite unlikely to be in any way distinguishable from the Canadian version.

I didn't really bother deciding between [1] and [4] though, since I wasn't really prize-motivated in the first place.

I C. Well, the Canadian Tylenol does have a small quantity of codeine in it, so it's probably illegal for me to have it, let alone to offer it as a prize to all ya'll in the general public. (It's basically Tylenol 4, I understand.)

But huzzah for you chiming in for the sheer joy of playing.

I could look (and I will after answering, just to see!) but I'm going to say (e) 10. (It was between that and (d), since [livejournal.com profile] upsidedownblue took the other possible answer.)

we have a winnah!

Congratulations---it was indeed (e) ten (10)! (For the curious, [livejournal.com profile] anderyn has chosen [4] {the pencil} as her prize. Stay tuned for future contests, as the finger condom could be available again!)
