I woke this morning to find that someone had added to the shopping list in my phone "Batteries for smoke detectors" (and could have added "and then put them in place properly, too, finally").  That's how I remembered that I'd dreamed there was a fire in the house, a house, the house I was living in in the dream, with my mother.

Somehow I had suspected earlier, in the dream background, that there was something making my room smell like smoke.  Then, in the dream narrative, my (now-dead) mother postulated that my (now-dead) cat had picked up a burning cigarette that was lying around and carried it somewhere where it was emitting smoke.  Turned out, when I went into the basement, there was a bonfire-ish fire going, on the floor, and a hole in the ceiling above, where the floor of my room was.  I shouted the news to Mom as I turned the large but barely-functional fire extinguisher on the flames.  Looked like it would do the trick, if frustratingly wimpy-spurtishly.

In the middle of the night the dream---perhaps joining the recent news of fires in local apartments and that dead-of-winter thing that makes house fires seem more likely (and I could tie it to a few other fire things)---seemed to be saying I need to be more careful in my precautions.  And, yeah, I'll do the smoke detector thing.  But my broader consciousness also knows there's something else in there about precautions, and realities, and drugs, and extinguishers, and denial.  Not that I know what the fuck-all it is.  But it's there.

"fire in the hole" idiom/warning, something about to go boom

Sometimes an animal like a cat is about creative power/independence/ambition? For some reason I am thinking independence in this case. The cat's out of the bag and setting the house afire!

Your "mom" is blaming this cat part of you for fire out of control that might burn the house down and end your current stable internal arrangement. The dream seems to suggest to me you've probably got it handled, but there is an ongoing issue as well and your fire extinguisher is not to be relied on?

For Buddhists it might reference an important parable.

In this case, it's just what you want, to recognize that your house is burning and do something about the danger (whether or not the cat deserves the blame for starting it!).

Dude. Thanks. I dig the parable.

I like the idea that there's something in how things really are that needs attending to, however it got started and whoever is pretending it's not going on or all about the cat or w/e. Like, step one, notice there's a fire, and step one.oh-oh-one, put it out. :)

Also, the cat part of me--- nice.

Sometimes I hesitate to write of dream plots. They can take so long to detail.

I think there is truth in the fire. And pain.

And the cat is not the smoker in the house. :)
