sloggin' along

Why is it, d'ya s'pose, that I have little to no interest in baseball this year? I suppose it may kick in later, with rooting against the Yankees in the Series or something, but so far, eh. I couldn't even name who's in the playoffs. You'd think this year I'd be getting into it. I'm starting to feel like I'm in a fog again.

Can't seem to get after the basic domestic tasks this week---laundry, dishes. I've been having spurts at doing well at that, too. I did cook for myself a little, but in general it's not been the best week. Feeling kinda isolated in the world, somehow.

And where are all you lj people? Not as many posts from the "friends" who are friends---a high percentage feeds of cartoons and news-y/political stuff. Is there some kinda bloggy sloggy downturn going on? (Exceptions noted---and appreciated.)

Not dealing with the stove yet. Maybe tomorrow. Oh, but now driving workmate's wife's sister to the airport tomorrow night. Workmate still in ICU, after some complications.

Watched some "Freaks And Geeks" on DVD tonight. Good show, but depressing to look at somehow, just now. H. loved the show, yeah, but I don't think that's it. Maybe it doesn't hold up to repeat viewing? Even that delightfully geeky, lippy smile/grin of morose-faced Bill, the kid with glasses---it's barely moving my heart. I've got a Marx Bros movie in the wings, but tonight I'm nowhere near manic (or even present) enough for it to have the effect the Bros had on Woody's character in Hannah. Dammit.

Wonder how much of this is the down side of caffeine abuse cycling.

Did have a postcard from dear ones. Maybe a trip soon.

I hadn't even realized that it was baseball playoffs time until you just now brought it up. I totally forgot about the entire season. Not that I ordinarily pay attention, but last year I was at least a smidge interested just because I was rooting for the Tigers to break the '62 Mets' record for most losses in a season. (If you have to lose, lose big!) Has anything of note happened this entire season? On any team?

Amusing Freaks and Geeks trivia: the creator of the show is from metro Detroit, and the school is actually modeled on the high school that my friend Erica attended. (Eisenhower High, maybe? I forget.) And some of the teachers are really transparent parodies of actual teachers who taught there back then and apparently still do. It's not enough to make me get into the show, but Erica apparently found it entertaining... I'll take My So-Called Life, meself.

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to say it was Joe Orsulak's ass in his uniform, but I really became a baseball fan the year the '88 Orioles set the record for most consecutive losses at the beginning of a season. That was SOME time in Bawlmer... Cool that the lovable/pathetic losers bring out the devotee in you, too.

Didn't realize until tonight that "Freaks" is set in Michigan. Michigan used to signify only something vaguely like "less-unsophisticated-than-Ohio Midwest" to me. Well, with a little militia thing in there too.

Funny you should mention "My So-Called Life"---I've got the first installments of that one here, too. I'd say it's a little laconic for me, which is what I was thinking earlier this week, but now I'm thinking I've got the laconic goggles on. Fuckin' X-Treme Bloodletting'd look laconic to me 'bout now.

And we know who else was involved with F&G, don't we?

[identity profile] lovelikeyeast.livejournal.com 2004-10-08 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Um. I forget? Or am just missing the reference...

There's one episode (the "Daniel is a Punker" one) where Ken mumbles either Chippewa or Chippewa Falls being their specific fictional suburb of Detroit ("what is she still doing in Chippewa Falls?"). The only mention I've ever caught that specific... It is hard to catch that it's in Michigan, because it is always one season on all episodes (mentioned in their commentary as being a product of their super-low budget). No weather drama. No heavy overcoats and boots and snow.

Love love love that show--the only show I was ever sorry to see canceled!-- but I can relate, Fflo. I think I need to wait a good long time before picking it up again (after having savored the dvd set and mourned finishing it) to really enjoy it.

xoxo

It's an MST3K (my favorite show) reference--I'm full of 'em.

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2004-10-10 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant to add before that I'm really drawn to that Ken character, for some reason(s). Can't wait until I get to the episode where he falls for the tuba player. I'm still a little in disbelief that they got on the air with that one.

[identity profile] disclaimerwill.livejournal.com 2004-10-08 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hee- I actually don't. Who?
groovesinorbit: (tom servo)

[personal profile] groovesinorbit 2004-10-08 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, indeed. : ) My beloved Dr. Forrester for one--he was in several episodes. Joel was also in a few, and J. Elvis Weinstein (Larry of Season 1) was a writer on a couple.

[identity profile] disclaimerwill.livejournal.com 2004-10-08 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I didn't know that! I remember that Trace Beaulieu wrote for America's Funniest Home Videos for awhile, which made me sad.
groovesinorbit: (tom servo)

[personal profile] groovesinorbit 2004-10-08 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. He still does, and J. Elvis still co-produces, as far as I know. Yeah, not quite the same level as our little puppet show.

Um, did you know that Frank wrote for Sabrina for a few seasons?

[identity profile] disclaimerwill.livejournal.com 2004-10-08 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I did know that! Didn't Joel work on some of the animatronics for that cat, too? I thought I remembered reading that... (I hate to admit how many times I watched Sabrina in high school. Not because I enjoyed it, but because neither I nor my then-girlfriend had a car, so we usually just wound up sitting at each other's house, watching TGIF in the absence of other things to watch.)

[personal profile] groovesinorbit 2004-10-08 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe you're right about Joel. I kept thinking Frank was doing the cat's voice, too, but his name wasn't in the credits.

The incredible brainsucking machine that is tv--all it takes is no car and a comfy seat.

Hi

[identity profile] vjsmom.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi [livejournal.com profile] fflo.

I've been sort of out of touch this week. Didn't talk to you today because when I got home from my AA meeting (which I'll tell you about at some later time), my spousal unit was playing poker yet again. He swears he'd not going to put any more real money into it, but I think I may have heard that one before.

Had a bit of a fender-bender in the Subaru today--actually a door-smoosher. No one was hurt, and my car was the only one damaged. Unfortunately, I think we'll probably end up having to replace the front passenger-side door, which I bet will be expensive. The whole thing was my fault, and the other car wasn't damaged, and there was a bit of a language barrier with the woman I hit, so no insurance companies are involved. I don't want our rates to go up, but I'm wondering if I did the right thing. I know who the woman is, so it's not like I can't locate her if I need to (her child is in day care across the street), but I'm used to going through official channels for such things. Oh well.

I didn't have that good of a day today--did see Donna at the gym, but then there was the little wreck. J's morning play date was okay except that Sangeetha was exhausted from being up with the baby all night. Then I had to help out in the kindergarten class, which was okay except that J got in trouble as soon as he walked in the door. (This time, he'd kissed one of his classmates on the bus--she didn't like it.) He was fine in class, though. Then there was the sitting out in the hallway for the hour of his music class--at least this time I was forewarned, so I brought a book.

We went out for dinner--I had a free entree coupon from Famous Dave's BBQ. I had iced tea--no martini--didn't like it--then off to the AA meeting.

What a day. I s'pose I should look at the bright side. At least I managed to stay sober. And I met some women who seem pretty cool.

Sorry that you're having a rough week. And I'm sorry about your oven. I know I can't fix that, but let me know if there's anything else I might be able to do to help. Hang in there. We'll talk soon.

Re: Hi

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2004-10-08 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, girl. Glad you're okay and all. The car thing is rough, but it too shall pass, right? (Gee, that sounds like I have a better attitude this morning for some reason---went by campus & got my free Coming Out Day T-shirt from the queer group office; picked up a bagel, too; having coffee again; breakfast date with J. tomorrow... plus I'm at work, where there are people all around and stuff I've got to do... )

Think it's already time to tell your son about the Antioch College sexual consent policy?

I'm sure we'll talk soon. Keep on keepin' on hangin' in with yer keepin' on gettin' by and doin' what ya do when ya do what ya do (to me or otherwise).

(?)

I havne't really been into baseball since I stopped going to old Tiger Stadium. I've never been to Comerica park, and naming it after a bank is gross.

Busy Saturday? I'm thinking of having folks over.

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2004-10-08 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
I did like that old Tiger Stadium, I must say. Old Comiskey was the only one I've been to with a more groovy retro feel (haven't been to Fenway yet). I liked Comerica, too, in that new appreciating-Camden-Yards style---but I agree with you about the name. And it doesn't have a warehouse.

Don't know about Sat. yet---I'll let you know. I've got some stuff for you for the shelter, though, so I have to see you sometime soon, at least.

Do catch up with me this weekend if you find yourself free.

Sorry to hear you're feeling down, girl. Caffeine abuse may be a factor.

I haven't posted in a couple days, I guess. Will do so today.

I've never seen Freaks & Geeks, but it has an MST3K connection, so I want to at some point. I heard it was good.

As far as the playoffs go, the Yanks are 1 and 1 with the Twins. The Cardinals are 2 and 0 against the Dodgers heading into California today. The Astros and Braves are tied, and the Red Sox are 2 and 0 against the Angels coming back to Boston this afternoon.

Go Sox!

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2004-10-08 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like you're revving up to be back on the radio, girl. Gonna include a sports wrap-up between bluesy rock 'n' roll sets?
groovesinorbit: (haring dj)

[personal profile] groovesinorbit 2004-10-08 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
We'll see how the Sox do! If the Yanks are winning I probably won't be sayin' much.

Yep, ready to get back on the radio, though. Chomping at the bit, so to speak. Ouch!

P.S.

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2004-10-08 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
Go Sox, indeed! Johnny D! Hairy Johnny! Johnny who, single-handedly, gave me a guy-being-shaved thing [see http://www.livejournal.com/users/fflo/90006.html]. Just not sure if I want to shave the guy, or watch a woman shave him. Pretty sure I don't want to be shaved. (Wonder if on any level it goes back to that picture of k. d. being shaved by that model woman.)

Re: P.S.

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2004-10-08 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
Being climbed all over, as the model (Cindy Crawford) did, is an activity I do enjoy, however. I was scaled by a physical therapist regularly last year; the very small woman, Maja, scampered over me like a was a pile of boulders with whose rearranging she was charged.

That was a wonderful photo layout--I bet it does go back to that. Did something for me, I must say.

And great smile on Johnny D's face when he's being shaved. Hmm ...

update on this butt (, kicked)

I love this sentence:
"the very small woman, Maja, scampered over me like a was a pile of boulders with whose rearranging she was charged."

sorry i've been out of the lj thing lately... as you know i've had some health issues-- headaches mostly. as of two days ago, i have been put on migraine drugs and i feel as dopey as Geo W Bush (well, not quite, I guess)--but at least I am starting to feel as though I might have some hope of living life without headaches every day again.

i should write this on my own page....i'll copy it there.

the drugs are topamax, an antiseizure drug, and relpax, which you take when you have a headache in progress.

i was reading this site called "crazymeds" on topamax-- this guy wrote: you might as well give up sodas now, because they will start tasting like butt once you're on topamax. he also warned that they might as well call it "dopamax" for the effects it can have on you--some of which i've noticed in the past few days, esp. at work! he also said "give up the bean (coffee)," but i didn't catch why. probably because it too will start to taste like butt.

and this "bisexual piscean egyptologist" has her own blog and takes topomax, relpax and a host of other for migraine, so maybe i am on the right track after all. her experience sounds familar too

http://www.backwash.com/content.php?jouid=8694

I have also spent a good deal of time writing letters to purportedly undecided women voters in FL, WA, and now OH (although one FL woman wrote back to me concerned that i didn't know God even though "God knows you, Sara"...and telling me that she was going to vote for God's candidate, the one against "gays marriage").

I should perhaps say that I wouldn't likely remember, or have noted so well to begin with, Maja's scaling Mount Lisa with her matter-of-fact physicality, had Holly not been taken with the notion/picture when I first told her about it. She pictured Maja as a monkey, moving around and over me, and though I resisted the image (and indeed chose not to use it here, talking about her) (it seemed to make fun of her smallness and nimbleness, and it raised the specter of racism, as she was of Pacific islander origin), it did stick with me, even as I continued to be treated by the woman.

I'll head over to your journal to respond to the other stuff.
