This discussion over in [livejournal.com profile] pijeanf's blog is reminding me of an old idea from British Labour politics, told to me by [livejournal.com profile] homovegetarian and apparently attributable to a Richard Neville: there's only an inch between the Tories/Conservatives and the Labor Party, but it's in that inch we live. It's referred to, among other places, in this interview with John Lennon from 1971.

There's a little on Richard Neville at this amazon listing for his book Hippie Hippie Shake.

The interesting thing to me about their discussion on that inch is how JL and the interviewer challenge it and think it puts us in a corner, which I think it does, too. I wish they'd gone into more detail on that.
