CATHOLIC CHURCH HUNTER'S [sic] MASS.
Houghton Lake, Michigan

The postcard was sent to the Bowmans of St. Clair, Mich. in Sept. of 1955 (or maybe '56) with this message: "Hello Chas & Nellie: Well we left home Wed. morning. Was going to Hubbard Lake but didn't like it there. So went to Mackinaw and back to Houghton lake. We have a cottage here. The wind as been blowing hard but it is nice now. As ever, Wess & Lou."

I don't know whether that's really funny or really terrifying...

What's with the green labels on everyone's back, I wonder.

Good question. Think they say "Please don't shoot me" or "NOT A DEER"? Oh, wait---maybe it was like a dance marathon or something, and they're numbered as contestants. Yeah. The judges would watch from the sidelines (wherever that would be) and go tap them on the shoulder for elimination whenever they shot another human or something.

They're hunting licenses, pinned to the back of their clothes so that they can be spotted as a licensed hunter by the DNR without the DNR having to disturb them out in the wilderness.

Thanks, Dan. I've never seen that before, just the stylish hunter orange everyone wears (and somebody still gets shot!).

Ah! Thanks. Though it'd be funnier if it were some kinda contest. . .

Yeah, me neither. I try to lean toward the former by not thinking about it too much. Surely they're praying to be more successful killers, though. Or that they'll get extra bacon after mass at the hunters' breakfast down at Restaurant, in the Best Western.

Hmm, hunting. Mixed feelings. Hunting for food--fine. Cuz, you know, if you're eating meat, something's dying regardless if you buy in the store or hunt it in the woods. Hunting for trophies--just plain damned evil.
