not real affirming, Affirmations

[livejournal.com profile] onstar reports that Affirmations, (Detroit suburb) Ferndale's "community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies," has, less than a week before its opening, cancelled a photography show of femme burlesque images that had been scheduled to begin tonight. The director of Affirmations, one Michael Coleman, said the exhibit was too "focused on sexuality." Someone called Maureen Jones, whose title at Affirmations is "Social Enrichment Coordinator," said it didn't meet standards as "family-friendly."

I guess they mean "family" not like "Hey, think they're 'family'?" so much as the way Jerry Falwell means "family."

Or is he dead? Maybe I mean the way Jerry Falwell meant "family."

Can't remember the name of that jerk in Colorado who's Focus(ing) on the "Family."

None of it is "family" as in how the Sister Sledge song was adopted by gay pride rallies & parades, or by Pittsburgh Pirates fans of the late 1970s.

In the article cited above, the photographer, Kristin Kurzawa, is quoted as having said "that Jones had personally seen and OK'd the photos, which include images of full-figured women dancing or performing---some in undergarments or garters, but none showing more skin than a woman in a bikini." [livejournal.com profile] onstar raises what seems to me a strong possibility when she says she suspects they were uncomfortable with seeing fat women's bodies.

There were a couple images that looked a little racy, but for the most part they were no more "sexual" or age-inappropriate than the stuff I see thrust before my kid's eyes all the time by advertising images. Frankly these images are a nice counterpoint to the material that the media usually treats us to, which reinforce body image messages I'm not real keen on.

OMG, chubby women having fun in scanty clothing, looking like they love themselves instead of frowning and miserable in the "before" section of a diet ad. WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!?! ::rolleyes::
