many moved by Bea Arthur

I guess she was an icon.

Sandi's first mention to me of being hot for a woman was, I believe, to being hot for Bea Arthur.

Me, here this afternoon, I gotta crank up the motivate, get myself moving. Inertia's been demonstrating itself comparatively too much in the body-at-rest tendency, vs. the kinetic variation.

Let's picture this icon Gertie creakily rising from her statuary roost, stretching out arms in a sideways yawny awakening, and hoppin' down offa there for a cruise around her park, brisker and brisker, ignoring all them New Yorkers who, astonished, start filming her with their phones and trying to persuade her to stop to sign a stony autograph.

(Okay she might pause if she encounters a big poodle.)

I remember stumbling into some little feminist arty humor 'zine back in the 80's or 90's being given away (or maybe my ex paid cash for it) at some feminist arty shop downtown. It was about post-Maude arts and culture, with comix. Seems that the young, hip, feminist arty woman who put it together had listened to a fellow arty feminist from New York pontificating on post-mod (post-modern) arts and culture, but that she had completely misunderstood her friend's New York accent for years. Because it seemed to her that Bea Arthur's character made as good a definition for a turning point in our culture as any.

So I guess here we are irreversably in the post-Maud world now.

make me cry, make me laugh, make me cry again but lighter

i love that song. so simple, and economical, in lyric & in melody. and a rhetorical question that sets up & embodies the dramatic situation, fleshed out just enough in the few lines that follow, that's one of yer fundamental dramatic situations.

in some senses things do get simpler as you get older.
