Did anyone else learn the word "squalor" from the title of the J. D. Salinger story?

I scratched my head; I looked it up; I scratched my head some more.

I took it in metaphorically before I took it in the other way.

Now I have multiple squalors in me whenever I alight on one.

It's an insanely perfect-sounding word for itself.

i think i learned it from some english short story. can't remember which one. also learned 'disrepair' then.
