i just took the phone apart a lot more than i'd have dared if i hadn't thought it dead beyond repair, and used office supplies and my pocketknife to remove & re-insert parts and clean connections, and, lo & behold, the sucker powered up and, after a coupla dazed minutes, accessed its self to present to me.

i take it as a sign--- a sign i oughta back up ya'll's phone numbers.
