(earlier) today was Cole Porter's birthday

He'd have been 117 this year.

His super-clever stuff with the lyrics is well and good---rarely is there weller or gooder that way---but I'm gonna plink up this one we just about all know, which is not a flashy wordy one, but a great lyric. It's one of those just perfect songs, and he does amazing stuff in these words, ever so quietly, simply.

Every time we say goodbye
I die a little
Every time we say goodbye
I wonder why a little
Why the gods above me
who must be in the know
think so little of me
they allow you to go

When you're near there's such an air
of Spring about it
I can hear a lark somewhere
begin to sing about it
There is no love song finer
but how strange the change
from major to minor
every time we say goodbye

A Cole Porter fan!! Have you heard "John Barrowman Swings Cole Porter?"

It is one of my favorite CDs.

It has:
1. Just One Of Those Things
2. What Is This Thing Called Love
3. In The Still Of The Night
4. I Happen To Like New York
5. Anything Goes
6. After You, Who?
7. Ca C'est l'Amour
8. Don't Fence Me In
9. Miss Otis Regrets
10. Do I Love You?
11. You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To
12. Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye
13. It's Alright With Me
14. Easy To Love

Barrowman easily has the most beautiful male voice I've ever heard. The way he sings these songs is breathtaking. His "Anything Goes" is pure joy.
His "Miss Otis Regrets" will make your eyes get wet.

If you haven't got this disc yet, order it. If you end up wanting more, another great disc by John Barrowman is "Reflections from Broadway."
Barrowman also does a splendid version of "Night & Day" with Kevin Kline in DeLovely.

Now that's an enthusiastic recommendation! I'll check him out.

I was a Gershwin(s) gal first, truth be told. My gateway drug to what we call old standards.

Cathy loves him too. There are tons of clips and songs on YouTube. check him out.

I can't hear that song without thinking of Sideshow Bob using it as his closing theme when he took over Krusty's show early in The Simpsons' run.

I'm sure you will be completely shocked to learn that.

(12 more days till MR! Yee!)

I started to make my way through the Simpsons via the library, but that's one buncha DVDs that are in sad shape, and that go missing a lot. Perhaps second only to those of the short-lived series, "How to Mess Up this DVD Real Good, If You Bother To Return It." (One of our new CEs, the relatively quiet VYO, is a huge Simpsons fan, though, and lent me Season 3, where I'd been stuck.)

Much looking forward to your MR summer cameo, btw. Or is it more like a former SNL cast member returning to host for a week?

Ooh, season three is a good season!

Using the SNL rubric, my return may be closer to Jon Lovitz's departure, where he left the show and then realized that he'd overestimated what opportunities were available to him in the rest of the world, and then kept hanging around the set week after week and they felt sorry for him so they wrote him into sketches here and there. :)

ha. more like they kept jonesing over the loss of Lovitz! whom you're funnier than, t'boot.

Heh, thanks. You may not be comforted to hear, then, that my repertoire has been pretty much whittled down to saying, "Yeah, that's the ticket," in a weaselly voice over and over...

I got dibs on an apartment in Ann Arbor this morning, too, so yay!

i've fantasized about being the renter in a seeking-summer-sublet situation in this town. for some reason i like to imagine getting a great deal on a penthouse in one of those tall tower apartments. and not so's i could jump at the end of the rental term.
