Re: protocol
Date: Oct. 11th, 2007 03:25 am (UTC)my favorite usage of it was in a safe-for-basic-cable version of Jackie Brown that ran on the F/X network when i lived in kansas. they dubbed in alternates to "bad" words, and, i swear, that writer of the alternates had a sense of humor. i had a whole essay about that dub job i was gonna do & try to get a slot delivering at the cultural studies conference, held every year in the Little Apple---cuz the next year's theme was something about family, family values, notions of family, etc., and that one work of dubbing said so much. what they chose to overdub, and when, and how...
anyway, the substitutions would often sound like the substitutees, particularly in the first sound of each word, which was sort of hilarious cuz it was like saying "f*ck"--- you really want them to know exactly what word you mean.
and the "mutual" substitution was ....drumroll... samuel l. jackson saying "give me back my mutual-fundin' money!" (the expression "mother-father" was used in a similar spot elsewhere in the film.)
there was an inconsistency with that character's usage of "ass"---this is part of where i thought the paper might have something to say. at some point he calls somebody an ass, and gets to say the word, undubbed, but elsewhere he refers to "my black ass," and it gets overdubbed! and what substitute then? the line's rendered "my black tuckus"!
