Ya'll were way off base on the Jersey thing. These lovely postcards, btw, are still up for auction on eBay for a day or two more, I think. If I remember right, the seller was asking what I'd say were rather high opening bids.

In the world of shoulda-woulda-couldas, I have to say that I was thinking, second-choice-wise, that the first one looked very conservative, and that would synch up with Utah.

Ah, but fundamentally, I was guessing the whole way through, and I could come up with rationalizations after the fact for any set of choices.

Some day, though, while I don't need to own it, I want to sniff that root beer smellin' pencil.

I'm not sure I'm ready for the great burden of owning such an artifact. It would be like owning the birds in the sky, or the sun and the moon. Those things must be experienced, but left in their natural habitat.

I have pencils--mechanical pencils, souvenier pencils, pencils whose erasers have been worn out, pencils whose dessicated, worthless erasers have never been used. I don't need another pencil to roll onto the floor behind a desk, forever forgotten. And the thought of that fate for the 9th wonder of the world (there are already more 8th wonders of the world than there are fifth Beatles), the legendary root-beer-smellin' pencil, saddens my heart. No. I just need one sniff.

If I were to bring home the root-beer-smellin' pencil, as if it could be owned, as if it weren't just another part of a world that we only borrow for our short lives, and pass to future generations as we ourselves pass into dust, into the pencil sharpener shavings of history, it must be earned, on the quizzing field, in fair battle with the good knights of the friends list of fflo. Anything else would be hollow, a sham, a shell.

A shameeful sham of a shell, shall we say?

This weekend I'll be duking it out on the field of battle known as the Michigan Farmer's hall of fame, flying rockets Saturday and Sunday. I expect to leave this evening, but I wouldn't expect to leave until 8:00 pm tonight or so.

I don't have your email anymore, and I guess there's no need to be coy secretive about it, so here it is: 677-4399

maybe you and pete should be, uh, partners, unless that would mean you'd have too much in common and things would get competitive
