I was never even remotely aware of San Luis Obsipo until it showed up in a Mountain Goats song I really quite like [Dance Music]. Now it pops up every couple of months.

I went there once. I think it was in a Bugs Bunny cartoon. The one where he shoulda take a left at Alba-coy-key, maybe. Anyhoo I'd seen a postcard of people digging for clams there and decided that was enough to merit a hundreds-of-miles detour.

Big Sur, on the other hand, despite Kerouacian legend, didn't offer me much. But then I was zipping through. The zip is probably not the way to "do" Big Sur.

Pismo Beach--- maybe that was Bugs's accidental destination? Or where the clam-digging happened?

It popped up on This American Life once, and there's been at least one more, I think. :^)

p.s. i love that "was never remotely aware of" and then "now it pops up" thing! i seem to notice it with words most.

i met a boring lesbian from san luis obispo once. she made lizards and sold them at the local feminist bookstore.
