And the answer to the question in the last entry in Generic Week is... the pennant!  Pennant or pennant-shaped flag, that is.

Oops-- they kinda missed their target on that second one.  Not a photo of an actual pennant!!  :D

Sometimes, like that, there'd be a photo, generic too usually, perhaps to add a sense that it wasn't generic.  More of those, plus other varieties,
here:

click for bigger, as usual

with verse (like the one on the right above was) and Native stereotyping

not about where you are being written to from, but what the person's type is

also with the makin' fun of the accent (like in the last one) but now with an actual felt pennant

Special bonus for you for clicking on the cut:  one with a message to share.  (I'm overdue for a Message Week.)

... and I'll even transcribe for ya, best I can.

Sent August 17, 1917, which was a Friday, and postmarked at 4pm, from Newfield, North Carolina
to Mrs. Wm MacLean
   #331 Second Ave.
   Lyndhurst, New Jersey
before zip codes
and there's currently a brick townhouse there built in 1974, so where Mother lived then is long gone

Message:
Dear Mother:  Your letter re- ceived.  I certainly was glad to hear from you.  Thanks for the recipes on canning.  I thought Father would be tired when he got home.  it is some trip.  Now Mother dear you must come to see us please don't say no.  The addition to the family is working too [sic] beat the band and it has got Guss's goat.  He has been very good.  The other night he fried some cucumbers for supper.    Love to all   Helen & Archie

It's a pretty ordinary message.  But that's fitting.  And even given that, it has at least one chuckle and a few ponderables in there.

Now let's go back outside the cut to finish up.

Okay, back outside the jump to show you one that went all-in on the generic

and one that was quite not generic, in photo or printed content, and makes a word joke
