The original series?  She was played by a woman who was also on a soap opera my grandmother (and my mother, some) watched.

Oh, the contortions I recall on her face.

What a weird part to play.

I think her part on "As the World Turns" was more conventional, though both were probably not unconventional roles for women, it seems safe to suggest.
