My name is Andrew Tanenbaum. I am one of the 7 million U.S. citizens living abroad. I am a professor of computer science at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Sometimes you hope for things really hard. Like when I was rolling around in the ditch in the middle of a car wreck on Dec. 8, 1978. Like when vjsmom was in surgery for 11 hours and then in a coma. Even a little like when I was wishing on that piece of pie in the City Café---but that one wasn't desparate and based on fear; that was a wish for a positive opportunity.

Anyway, each of those times I got what I'd appealed to the Fates for. Today I don't feel quite that most intense/raw/unguarded/exposed & powerless pleading---but it's close.

It's not that I think things will be so great if Kerry is elected. It's just that I'm certain it will be a terrifying, threatening time for what is good about this country if he is not.
